Steven Bochco, Creative Force Behind 'Hill Street Blues,' 'L.A. Law' and 'NYPD Blue,' Dies at 74

Source: Hollywood Reporter

Steven Bochco, the strong-willed writer and producer who brought gritty realism and sprawling ensemble casts to the small screen with such iconic series as Hill Street Blues, L.A. Law and NYPD Blue, died Sunday morning, a family spokesman told The Hollywood Reporter. He was 74.

Suffering with leukemia, Bochco received a stem cell transplant from an anonymous 23-year-old in late 2014.

"Steven fought cancer with strength, courage, grace and his unsurpassed sense of humor," spokesman Phillip Arnold said. "He died peacefully in his sleep [at home] with his family close by."

The diner scene with Caruso and Franz that opened the series.

I slightly preferred Hill St, but they were all superb.

I thought: "That doesn't look like L.A.!"

I think she meant the interiors were filmed there.

The exteriors looked like Chicago. The police uniforms and the police car livery looked like those in Chicago.

while racing home from work, to see "Hill Street Blues" my favorite show. My rear view mirror had fallen off, and I did not see the flashing lights behind me! I was hoping he would not see the mirror laying on my back seat. He gave me a warning, said he had an armed robbery to go to, and left. Next day I read that the Kentucky Fried Chicken had been held up the night before.

Hadn't him about anything from him for a long time. Andy Sipowicz was a fully realized character.

condolences to the family, and thank you for some iconic shows (which was also thanks to Mary Tyler Moore's MTM Enterprises that helped to bring about significant shifts in how drama was presented).

Institute of Technology) which he attended but after I had transferred out. His wife, Barbara Bosson, my friend, was my classmate at CIT. The marriage failed but they had two children. Bobbie is still in LA and helped my daughter find a job in costume design when she moved there. Bobbie and Stephen had two children, Melissa and Jesse.

He was certainly a groundbreaker in TV dramas. Great talent.
