Fox News host Laura Ingraham's tweet about Parkland survivor David Hogg reportedly prompted Miriam Chaiken, a dean at New Mexico State University (NMSU), to commit to raising scholarship funds for him and other survivors to attend her college.
Chaiken, according to the Albuquerque Journal, wrote a letter to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School's principal, telling them "what magnificent students you have, and how like many I am inspired by their determination and commitment to making the world a better and safer place.
Please tell David, Emma [Gonzalez], and any other of your student leaders, that they are welcome at the William Conroy Honors College and at New Mexico State University, Chaiken said.
Hogg, who gained publicity for his gun control activism after the mass shooting at his high school, publicly complained that several colleges rejected him.

(7,538 posts)Laura Ingraham likely inadvertently netted David Hogg a potential scholarship! Good on NMSU!
I hypothesized a while back that colleges would be falling over themselves to recruit the MSD activist students for their journalism or political science programs.

(11,572 posts)I wonder what it was that made the other schools reject him. Does every other applicant have a GPA higher than 4.2?

(65,490 posts)extremely talented students with high GPAs. They can't accept them all, so inevitably some who are excellent candidates will nevertheless be rejected. Schools have a number of other criteria besides the GPA when selecting students for admission. They want a diverse student body with both high grades and a range of talents, interests, and experiences.
It's just like with medical school. Most students who apply to a given medical school will be rejected (only about 40% get accepted to any med school!), even though almost all will have stellar GPAs and a lot of other qualities that make them excellent candidates. I know several of the most impressive applicants you can imagine who didn't get into med school on their first try, despite applying to as many as 30! I know several who had to take out thousands of dollars in loans to afford to apply to so many schools.
I know others who applied to 20 to 30 schools and were accepted to just one--and that one not their first choice.
David Hogg, like most excellent students applying to highly competitive schools, knew his chance of being accepted to all of them would be very low. The reason such impressive students apply to so many schools, even though it is costly to submit an application, is that they know they will not get into some--or even most--of the ones they apply to.
