Perez: Confident DNC will get a jury trial in lawsuit

BY JULIA MANCHESTER - 04/22/18 09:59 AM EDT
Democratic National Committee (DNC) chairman Tom Perez said on Sunday that he is confident the committee will get a jury trial in its lawsuit against the Trump campaign, Russia, and WikiLeaks over alleged election interference.
"I'm confident we will get a jury trial," Perez told NBC's Chuck Todd on "Meet the Press."
"I want to make sure we send a very clear signal," he said. "This was an assault on our democracy and we have to protect that."
"I'm punching back not only for my colleagues, I'm punching back for democracy."
Perez's comments come after the DNC announced last week it was suing Russia, the Trump campaign, and WikiLeaks over alleged Russian election meddling, saying the three actors worked to help President Trump win the 2016 election.

(25,111 posts)that should have been filled in during Obama's presidency and putting in RWers for suits like this. A Rwer judge would probably dismiss or lessen the charges, plus, the GOPs would not have and still won't stop Russian influence nor their billionaire's influence, nor social media and GOP's red state vioiation of voting rights.
With the RWers in congress, FBI, DOJ, CIA, etc. that are doing their best into destroying Mueller's investigation, the DNC keeps it front and center.
Secondly, and really surprising, Stromy has created a hurricane 5 effect.

(58,785 posts)There's a long list of allegations and 12 complex counts against (I think I counted) 16 defendants (seemingly there are 10 unidentified people under one of those). Trump himself is not named, but campaign officials, "confidants," Junior and Kushner are.
In this bizarre era, even with 24/7/365 to fill, the media have far more than they can handle at all properly, even if they tried, and now another ring will open in the national circus.
Eventually. Any info or informed guesses on possible scheduling?

(39,405 posts)It does show that there's substance to the allegations.
It also shows that the centrist wing of the party is willing to fight rather than roll over as soon as the Republicans clear their throat to possibly object.
I don't know whether it is good politics, but it seems like a good sign.
My concern as always is once the indictments are issued, people tried and convicted, or in this case, lawsuits won, what our future policy will be toward Russia and indirectly China.
This doesn't change the overall economic and geopolitical trends and likely not even a war would.
We have to figure out how to co-exist in a multi-polar world.
Once we do, we can finally get that peace dividend everybody was talking about at the end of the Cold War.
(or maybe trying to prevent that is why all this conflict is going on).

(4,423 posts)Trump counter suit that Hillary and the DNC paid for the Steele Dossier and tried to use it to hurt Trump i.e. defamation or some such crap?
but more importantly why are we having to file a lawsuit, when Mueller is sure to start announcing indictments on Don Jr. et.al, any day now ?

(32,626 posts)is standard, and also a republican originally contracted for this particular report. Is there something illegal about this practice? If not...why not file a lawsuit? There are no certainties in Mueller's investigation.

Trumps mention of Servers refers to a conspiracy theory he has advanced for more than a year, ironically set off by congressional testimony of then FBI director James Comey, who is currently touring behind a bestselling memoir in which he portrays Trump as morally unfit for office.
In January 2016 testimony about an FBI investigation of cyber-attacks including on the DNC, Comey said Democrats had not turned over computer servers but substituted a review of the system performed by the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike.
This my folks tell me was an appropriate substitute, Comey said.
Its not trial by tweet this is going to be a court where facts matter and justice is served
Tom Perez
Trump disagrees. On Friday, he wrote: Just heard the Campaign was sued by the Obstructionist Democrats. This can be good news in that we will now counter for the DNC Server that they refused to give to the FBI...
Appearing on ABCs This Week on Sunday, Perez said he was not in the least concerned by Trumps bluster.
The beauty of the civil justice system, he said, is that its not trial by tweet. This isnt going to be a kangaroo court with [House intelligence committee chair and Trump backer] Devin Nunes. This is going to be a court where facts matter and justice is served. And if they want to relitigate all of their wild theories, theres this thing called rule 11 where you get sanctioned for trying to do things like that.

Asked if the DNC risked taking its eye off the ball ahead of November elections in which control of Congress will be at stake, Perez said: We can walk and chew gum. ........................................

(5,586 posts)Theyre going to have to go through a discovery process. Prepare to hear about Seth Rich, the dossier, and any other bullshit they can think of.
And as far as i know, nobody except the DNC and a security firm they retained has seen / examined the compromised email server. The Repubs will almost certainly request their own security experts examine the hacked server.
