Democratic billboards greet GOP in Tampa
By Alicia M. Cohn - 08/23/12 12:12 PM ET

Democrats are not leaving Republicans alone during the GOP national convention next week.

A billboard located in Tampa, Fla., the location of the Republican National Convention beginning on Aug. 27, reads: "Welcome to Tampa! Where the mayor and all city council members are Democrats. Enjoy your visit!"

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) posted a photo of the billboard on its Facebook page Thursday.

And, that they put this on a really cool billboard is awesome!

The city of Tampa may be Democratic, but that does not mean that all of Hillsbourgh County is Democratic. St.Pete is in Pinellas County across the bay (Tampa Bay) and it's straight out Conservative and Republican- with perhaps plenty of Teabaggers to boot.

Actually, I would like a billboard that just says something like,

"Here's a gift for you GOPBaggers *finger (photo of a real hand)*"

Simple!

ridiculous claims. If Robertson's claims were true, the post implies, then the opposite must be true if God visits disasater on those who legislate against abortion and LBGT rights.

Robertson has said that America suffers natural catastrophes because we tolerate abortion and LBGT rights. Falwell said that 9/11 happened because God wanted to punish us for the same thing.

But if a hurricane hits Florida during the Republican National Convention, then, the poster suggests, that would mean that God is disagreeing with the Republicans, which would mean that He approves of what the Republicans disapprove of: abortion and LBGT rights.

That would have killed the joke, DD. The humor was in the irony. However, I get it. If you look at the sentence defensively, from the position of an attack on the pro choice and LGBT communities, I can see how it can be misconstrued, especially so far removed from Katrina and the flood of evangelical diatribes. The cruelty of Robertson's et al. words, however, live with me and when the thought hit me, I jumped at the chance to throw them back in the face of the radical evangelical right. I assume if my words were written by a "trusted" member of the community, they would have been seen for what they are without the need for defense or explanation. I get that.

than national average, and yet we're going to advertise that the whole city is run by Democrats?

Obviously the smart among us know that these issues go beyond whether a D or an R is in office, but this billboard to me looks like a terrible idea.

Like D.C., historically some of the highest and worst crime in the country, do we really want to yell from a megaphone that the entire city council and every single mayor D.C. has ever had are Democrats?

DC crime rate is decreasing. I work in one of DC's "worst" schools and it's been improving over the years. The more help and better schools the kids get, the more the crime decreases.

...we can't afford it. Taunting committed Republicans who will never change their minds is not the best way to use any excess cash. It's childish.

How about a billboard that had some real statistics about what Democrats have actually accomplished or about what the Ryan plan will do to Medicare? It is the land of retirees after all.

non-partisan. On the other hand, I remember the 1968 convention and we remember Chicago & Mayor Daley far less than HHH and the delegates. Convention security is local police and USSS - so should the protestors complain about their treatment, there won't be any republican hands on the controls. If the Governor allocates NG trools, they will be under local Tampa control.
