NBC News Corrects Story, Says Michael Cohen Wasn't Wiretapped
Source: Daily Beast
NBC News issued an on-air correction to their bombshell story Thursday reporting that a federal wiretap was placed on Michael Cohens phone. NBC said federal authorities were monitoring phone calls of President Trumps lawyer, but not listening to them as previously reported. Authorities obtained a log of Cohens phone calls, known as a pen register, NBC quoted three senior U.S. officials as saying.

(44,187 posts)EDITOR'S NOTE: Earlier today, NBC News reported that there was a wiretap on the phones of Michael Cohen, President Trumps longtime personal attorney, citing two separate sources with knowledge of the legal proceedings involving Cohen.
But three senior U.S. officials now dispute that, saying that the monitoring of Cohens phones was limited to a log of calls, known as a pen register, not a wiretap where investigators can actually listen to calls.
NBC News has changed the headline and revised parts of the original article.

(16,104 posts)It's all they've been "BREAKING" for the last couple hours, Mueller overstepping his boundaries and wiretapping the White House!
What will be the next creative narrative they come up with - aside from "FAKE NEWS" they failed to confirm like a real news organization would and should?

(5,943 posts)per a post on Reddit...
"Federal investigators obtained a "pen register" on Cohen's phones. Information that can be collected from a telephone pursuant to a "pen register" include the following:
*Dialed numbers
*Received call numbers
*The time the call was made
*Whether the call was answered, or went to voicemail
*The length of each call
*Contents of SMS text messages
*Post-cut-through dialed digits (digits you dial after your call is connected, such as a PIN number)
*The real-time location of your cell phone to within a few meters.

Remember this when Faux News and the idiots over at T_D claim that NBC is fake news. Law enforcement can get a lot of information on Cohen through a pen register. In my view, when the sources for the original story said that Cohen's phone was "tapped," what they meant was that law enforcement was reviewing his text messages in real time."

(5,075 posts)Is it possible that the original "leak" might have been made to create panic in one or more parties so that they do something stupid? IOW, a possible trap.

(30,817 posts)If sources said they were 'monitoring' the calls, it would be easy to assume they were listening in. It could be that the sources that leaked it misunderstood too.

(8,733 posts)With such a significant story and given the constant assault on the integrity of the media, especially organizations like NBC News, it is better to be right than first.
It does us no good to defend them when they make such serious mistakes on stories that have so much attention on them.
If they didnt understand the terms and technology used, they should have clarified before running the story.

(8,733 posts)The silver lining in this is the quick response and clarification.
Not trying to pick but I also feel missteps like this do the media no favors either.

(129,543 posts)They obviously share info and anchors and whatnot and because MSNBC is cable and sortof doing politics/news almost 24/7, then they (or CNBC) end up discussing it since the NBC broadcast network is running whatever entertainment stuff they run (soaps or "lifestyle" talk nonsense or whatever).

(9,084 posts)NBC reported incorrectly and corrected it. That's the right way to do it. They report correctly the majority of the time and when they don't they correct it. What more can you ask of a news agency?
I say screw the Faux News brainwashed who want to bash their heads over what's normal.

(43,311 posts)if games are being played. If someone hears their phone is tapped, paranoia and/or anger and worry ensue. Turn up the heat in other words. Now the story is they're not wiretapped. Whew! Can talk as much as ever.
