CAGUAS, PUERTO RICO At least 4,645 people died as a result of Hurricane Maria and its devastation across Puerto Rico last year, according to a new Harvard study released Tuesday, an estimate that far exceeds the official government death toll, which stands at 64.
The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that health care disruption for the elderly and the loss of basic utility services for the chronically ill had significant impacts across the U.S. territory, which was thrown into chaos after the September hurricane wiped out the electrical grid and had widespread impacts on infrastructure. Some communities were entirely cut off for weeks amid road closures and communications failures.
Researchers in the United States and Puerto Rico, led by scientists at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, calculated the number of deaths by surveying nearly 3,300 randomly chosen households across the island and comparing the estimated post-hurricane death rate to the mortality rate for the year before. Their surveys indicated that the mortality rate was 14.3 deaths per 1,000 residents from Sept. 20 through Dec. 31, a 62 percent increase in the mortality rate compared to 2016, or 4,645 excess deaths.
Our results indicate that the official death count of 64 is a substantial underestimate of the true burden of mortality after Hurricane Maria, the authors wrote.

(70,506 posts)(CNN)President Donald Trump told Puerto Rican officials Tuesday they should be "very proud" that hundreds of people haven't died after Hurricane Maria as they did in "a real catastrophe like Katrina."
"Every death is a horror," Trump said, "but if you look at a real catastrophe like Katrina and you look at the tremendous -- hundreds and hundreds of people that died -- and you look at what happened here with, really, a storm that was just totally overpowering ... no one has ever seen anything like this."
"What is your death count?" he asked as he turned to Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló. "17?"
"16," Rosselló answered.
"16 people certified," Trump said. "Sixteen people versus in the thousands. You can be very proud of all of your people and all of our people working together. Sixteen versus literally thousands of people. You can be very proud. Everybody watching can really be very proud of what's taken place in Puerto Rico."

(55,445 posts)because they're brown people who don't speak English and they usually vote Dem anyway so Donnie gives less than a rat's ass, especially since he's already had his precious photo-op for the archives and he declared the crisis resolved...

This is 2 and one half times worse.......If, and I say If, 1000 were killed and the word went out that one thousand were killed, or 2000 were killed, there would have been more concern and much more help...but the official number I heard was always under 100..
But....Trump and company....totally underplayed deaths. News reports never went over 1000 that I remember...or even 100..
OFFICIAL TOTAL......65....NOW THE TOTAL IS OVER 4600

(38,427 posts)If you look at the bottom of the list, you will see the last 100 years...Because of Trump's under reporting, and lack of concern, we missed understanding the horrific effects of Maria...take a look.. This would put Hurricane Maria as the worst hurricane in the last 90 years...(in terms of deaths)...Yes, Puerto Rico is part of the United States...Oh, and this lack of concern about thousands of deaths, was no mistake..Trump downplayed it on purpose...He didn't care...
One more point...the CNN story at the link has deaths due to Maria at 1000. Todays number is over 4600.
If you look at that chart, the deaths in Puerto Rico reported today, make this hurricane, Maria, the most deadly in the last 100 years...
