Corker: Republicans are working on plan against Trump tariffs

Source: The Hill

BY JACQUELINE THOMSEN - 06/03/18 08:20 AM EDT

Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) said that he and other Senate Republicans are working on a plan to fight President Trump’s decision to no longer exempt U.S. allies from steep steel and aluminum tariffs.

Corker spoke out against the tariffs in a pair of tweets on Saturday, sharing pieces from The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post on the tariffs.

The retiring senator, who has publicly criticized Trump in the past, previously called the decision to slap tariffs on the European Union, Mexico and Canada “an abuse of authority intended only for national security purposes."

Several other top Republicans have also spoken out against Trump’s decision to impose the tariffs, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.).

Mitch McConnell would no longer be the majority leader.

They can look the other way and make token statements against Dolt 45 when it suits their purposes. But these tariffs stand a chance of starting a trade war and damaging the economies of a lot of red states. Hell, it's already starting. If the bleeding worsens, they're going to be looking at midterms with an energized Democratic Party and a lot of pissed off, hurting red state voters. Those voters might not vote for Democrats, but they could conceivably stay home rather than voting.

Of course, this might just be some nice kabuki theater so they can say to those red state voters, "Hey, we tried to fix it, but those bad old Democrats wouldn't work with us, don'tcha know."

I like to think it's the former, though. There's no logical justification for Trump's tariffs, not even the most tenuous thread. Maybe I just like to imagine them running scared because of the monster they helped create.

After all the Repugants created this monster so I say let them reap what they have sown.
Yes, it will suck for the majority of people including myself however people sometimes need to have their noses rubbed in their mistakes in order to learn to avoid repeating them.

Unions like AFL-CIO and Steelworkers have been praising Trump's actions on tariffs. The Republicans generally oppose these unions and oppose tariffs as they are bad for their corporate globalists they are beholden to.

Do Democrats want to alienate unions and take the side of corporations just because it opposes one of TRump's actions that they used to generally support before he actually did it?
