Canadian foreign minister to US: Think hard about message you're sending your closest allies

Source: The Hill

BY LUIS SANCHEZ - 06/03/18 10:07 AM EDT

Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said on Sunday that the U.S. should “think hard” about the message it sends to allies by imposing steel and aluminum tariffs on them.

“I would just really say to our closest allies in the world you, the United States, please think hard about the message you are sending to your closest allies,” Freeland told CNN’s “State of the Union.”

President Trump announced last Thursday that he would impose a 25 percent tariff on imported steel and a 10 percent tariff on imported aluminum from key U.S. allies, including Canada, Mexico and European Union.

The president justified the action by citing Section 232 law, a rarely invoked law that allows tariffs to be placed on a country in the interest of national security.

or do much in the thinking dept whatsoever. You'll have to levy punitive tariffs against his base in red states to put people out of work.

I work with Canadians. Great people. I see Windsor Ontario across the Detroit River out my building's windows. My roots go back to the 1600s in Canada. I am so sorry Canada. The dangerous fool in the White House is not supported by most Americans.

knows what the message is... it's "f*ck you".

That's why the Germans have been publicly stating that the US can no longer be considered an ally. And they're far from alone.

It's a deliberate shattering of the old post war alliance.

I don't see the ideological linkage but perhaps it is just pure profiteering. Suck the economy dry and let the poor people dig their own graves.

to Trump. If it is weak, he will do Canada again. (Hint: what comes from Red States that you can buy elsewhere, including within the USA.)

And will break anything he does agree to. They're wasting their time even meeting with this puppet of putins now. He's so corrupt, and is doing like putin has done. They should all align against him now, and isolate him, or they'll be sorry. Some may be sorry anyway from this thug. Especially Canada and Mexico. If he does more like putin both Mexico and Canada should be very scared of this guy.

thinking hard is reading a comic book.

Fox & friends does all of Trump's hard thinking for him.

I hate to say this Canadian friends but if you want Trump to layoff the tariffs, you must bribe him and his crime family.

It's the only way Don the con can be reached.

And the Republican Party doesn't really care either. They have done absolutely nothing to rein Trump in but, instead, have given him a blank check.
