Lawyer: Black woman forced to expose herself at Target

Source: Associated Press

Updated 5:19 pm, Tuesday, June 5, 2018

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (AP) — A lawyer for a black Detroit-area woman says Target employees falsely accused her of stealing a bikini and forced her to expose parts of her body.

Attorney Jasmine Rand said Monday 20-year-old Ashanae Davis was shopping at a Target May 22 in Southfield. A security worker grabbed her arm, another handcuffed her and she was walked to a room, where she was told to lift her shirt and pull down her pants.

Rand says employees in the room were a white man, black man and white female manager.

Minneapolis-based Target says the woman was originally stopped because she had a swimsuit with tags in her bag that was later determined to have been purchased elsewhere. Target says the first security guard who confronted the woman has been fired.

This woman was under no legal obligation to remove even one stitch of clothing in front of store workers. She could have instructed them to call the police, who likely would have handled it more professionally, or at least with an eye toward covering themselves against litigation.

Any store security detail will try to get away with what they can to effect an arrest. See "Paul Blart, Mall Cop".

You think? First, if she's still in the store, she hasn't yet shoplifted, even IF she was thinking about stealing that swimsuit.

So, they screwed up from the very beginning.

Then, why the strip search if the "reasonable cause" was a swimsuit in the bag. If she was trying to shoplift something, they already had their evidence (which turned out to be a big nothing).

I'm surprised the manager didn't get launched too.

Why was it determined "later" that the swimsuit in her bag was from another store? That should have been the FIRST thing they determined and then none of this would have happened.
