(CNN)A White House contractor wanted by police on an attempted first-degree murder charge was arrested as he came into work on Tuesday, law enforcement officials said.

In a statement, the US Secret Service said it was notified on Monday the contractor, Martese Edwards, was the subject of an arrest warrant issued by Prince George's County in Maryland, just outside of Washington.

Edwards was promptly arrested by Secret Service Uniformed Division Officers at a checkpoint outside of the White House complex when he was reporting to work as a contractor," the Secret Service statement read.

As a contractor, Edwards would have had access to at least some part of the White House complex, and would be subject to security screenings before entering the grounds.

The County’s Sheriff’s Department confirmed they had an open warrant for attempted first degree murder and assault, for Edwards, filed and entered into the national crime information database on May 17.

The Secret Service says it was notified of the arrest warrant June 4 — the day before the arrest.

Prince George’s County Police says they issued a multiple-count arrest warrant on May 17, the same day the Prince George’s County’s Sherrif’s Department entered the warrant into the national crime information database.

Edwards was charged for attempted first-degree murder and assault.

Police say Edwards was involved in a shooting on May 3 in the 4200 block of Suitland Road in Suitland, Maryland.

Edwards shot his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend, a 26-year-old male who was shot in the abdomen and suffered a life-threatening injury, police say.

With such a definite connection to the crime, you'd think the guy would either have been turned himself in (with or without an alibi), or been properly on the run - not just turning up for work a few weeks later.
