Cindy Axne won the Democratic nomination for Congress Tuesday in Iowa's 3rd District and will oppose U.S. Rep. David Young in November's general election.
Axne, 53, a former state government official and a small-business owner from West Des Moines, was declared the winner by the Associated Press less than an hour after polls closed.
Young, a two-term Republican from Van Meter, was unopposed for his party's nomination. So was Bryan Jack Holder of Council Bluffs, a Libertarian Party candidate who has unsuccessfully run for public office in the past.
The 3rd Congressional District covers 16 counties in southwest Iowa and includes the cities of Des Moines and Council Bluffs. Young, a former chief of staff for U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley, was elected to the seat in 2014 and was re-elected in 2016.
