A Medical Mystery Grows as U.S. Consulate Workers in China Fall Ill

Source: New York Times

GUANGZHOU, China — A crisis over a mysterious ailment sickening American diplomats and their families — which began in Cuba and recently appeared in China — widened on Wednesday. The State Department evacuated at least two more Americans who fell ill in China after hearing strange noises, officials said.

Many other employees at the American Consulate in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou and their family members are also being tested by a State Department medical team that has been flown in, officials said. It is unclear how many of them are exhibiting symptoms, but officials expect more American personnel to be evacuated.

For months, American officials have been worried that their diplomats have been subjected to targeted attacks involving odd sounds, leading to symptoms similar to those “following concussion or minor traumatic brain injury,” the State Department says.

The new illnesses in China come just weeks after American officials reported finding their first case in Guangzhou, where a consulate employee got sick after reporting disturbing noises.

And if the same plans, equipment, or contractors were part of a new installation.

Could be something induced through a State Dept. facilities contract as well as something from a foreign government.

BTW, China hasn't been "Communist" since the 90's, even though the People's Republican Party still runs the show.
It's pretty much a Technocratic Plutocracy.

Same laundry detergent? Cleaners?

Sounds as much like a toxic environment issue as a 'secret sound weapon'.

Everybody seemed to be trying to defend Cuba when it happened, in spite of the fact nobody except those defending Cuba claimed anybody said Cuba was responsible.

Could be Bhutanese, for all we know. They'd have as much access as most.

Except for one trip to Germany, I haven't been so lucky but have enjoyed good cuisine around the US and bit in Canada.

My hobby on my service job trips was to find out of the way locally-owned restaurants. Usually, plant maintenance people could always steer me to some good ones!

It's been a long while since we lived in England but I LOVED the veggies there. I shopped open farmer's markets there.

exposures.

My hubs is a physicist specializing in ultrasound, has medical patents in the field and says our gov't is not consulting the proper specialists to evaluate this serious situation.

This article is very good; our gov't should be consulting specialists like these, not physicians, even very esteemed ones.

singular occurrence. The fact that this is also happening in China is causing me to review that opinion. An American diplomat probably wouldn't be prone to hysteria, and the symptoms appear to be the same.

Why can't scientists figure out what it is?
