Undercover ICE officers reportedly gave out donuts before raid

Source: The Hill

BY JOHN BOWDEN - 06/06/18 04:27 PM EDT

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents who raided an Ohio gardening and landscaping company on Tuesday initially posed undercover in the company break room, offering free donuts to employees before the raid began.

The Washington Post reports that agents initially showed up in the company's break room offering free Dunkin' Donuts to workers at the rural facility before more agents swarmed the business using helicopters and dogs, handcuffing employees and separating legal workers from undocumented immigrants.

“We’re on a barn, so we can’t escape,” Corso’s Flower and Garden Center employee Salma Sabala told a local NBC affiliate. “They’re armed. They had the dogs. We hear the helicopters on top of us. They took them on a big bus.”

Local media reported that 114 suspected undocumented immigrants were arrested during Tuesday's raid, which followed other recent crackdowns from ICE agents, including raids on dozens of 7-Eleven convenience stores in January.

Maybe DD and 7-11 can partner up and expand their market. I see an ICE government privatization corporate plan here to be exploited. What do you say donut lovers around the world for a few free globs of real dough how bout giving KK (Krispey Kream) a challeng.

The employer self reported?

Possible scenario: Employer was skimming employee paychecks, and some of the employees figured out what was going on and confronted their boss! Instead of paying, employer contacted ICE and made a deal!

After all, the owner can always hire more bodies, once things cool down!

Just a possible scenario!

when they're laying off workers, but no landscaping company is going let workers go during the summer. Trust me. I worked for a landscaping company.

They fill jobs Americans won't take, or can't do, or can't afford to do.

But, he was trying to get immigration laws changed.

Still the raids were going on then and the detention centers were awful then, too.

Before 2009 each ICE office worked as a separate franchise and they went on locally authorized raids and targeted easy targets like Latino neighborhoods.

After 2009 DHS had specific instructions that general raids and individual arrests for law abiding undocumented migrants was no longer a priority of ICE. In fact there were significant others of DUers who reported that they had grown weary of hiding and reported to ICE offices and were told that ICE was no longer taking inaction.

In San Diego an ICE officer brought in an individual that was undocumented, but had no criminal convictions and the ICE Officer was severely disciplined.

Immigration enforcement, as laid out in a 2014 memo, also focused on immigrants who committed crimes and those who arrived after the beginning of 2014.

“A more robust enforcement system inevitably inflicts damage on established families and communities,” the Migration Policy Institute report said.

What ICE did not do during the Obama era was detain people who were in the wrong place at the wrong time. ICE was instructed to arrest only people who were targeted in advance and not just anybody swept up in a raid, so-called collateral arrests.

Obama said his government did not have the desire to deport millions of undocumented immigrants whose only crime was to enter the country illegally.

. . .

Only a small part of those arrests, however, were the result of ICE raids or other enforcement operations. “Instead, most of these estimated weekly 1,250 ICE apprehensions happened when ICE assumed custody of individuals held by another law enforcement agency,” the TRAC report says.

(By the way this source is the VOA which is now controlled by Trump

In fact ICE officers were not free to go roaming around and conducting raids because they were physically moved to prisons to search through prison populations and ascertain violent criminals with violent pasts and concentrate on them. I know because I visited ICE deportation officers in their offices at prisons where they were moved from their offices.

It is true that under Obama a few raids were conducted by ICE but they had to have a basic criminal basis besides immigration infractions for example:

ICE arrests 51 during 4-day operation targeting criminal aliens, immigration fugitives in the Chicagoland area
..
CHICAGO — As part of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) ongoing commitment to prioritizing the removal of criminal aliens and egregious immigration law violators, 51 convicted criminal aliens, immigration fugitives and immigration violators were arrested last week during a four-day operation in northern Illinois and northwest Indiana.

This operation concluded Sunday and was conducted by ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Chicago.

Of the 51 arrested, 44 had prior convictions for crimes such as: child molesting, aggravated battery, drunken driving, criminal sexual abuse, fraud and drug possession. Eighteen of the 51 were immigration fugitives who had been previously ordered to leave the country, but failed to depart; some of these also had prior criminal convictions, in addition to an outstanding deportation order. Nine of those arrested had been previously deported, but illegally re-entered the United States, which is a felony.

The scope and nature of ICE investigations and operations changed dramatically from Bush to Obama and even more radically from Obama to Trump. They are not the same kind of raids. Most ICE officers were physically moved to work in prisons and jails and were not conducting raids under Obama.

6. A man delivering pizzas to an Army base in Brooklyn was arrested and turned over to ICE

Pablo Villavicencio-Calderon regularly delivers pizzas to Fort Hamilton, but on his latest trip, instead of returning home, he was detained by ICE and now faces deportation. Villavicencio-Calderon's wife and two children are American citizens and his green card application is still in processing.

The family of a 35-year-old pizza delivery man, who was arrested by U.S. Army officials while making a routine delivery to a military base in Brooklyn Friday, is demanding answers about what happened.

Pablo Villavicencio, who lived in Hempstead, Long Island with his wife, Sandra Chica, and their two daughters, has been in federal immigration custody since Friday. In a press conference Wednesday, flanked by Brooklyn officials, Chica said Villavicencio expects to be deported back to his home country of Ecuador next week after living for 10 years in the U.S.

“Every day it was a risk for him,” Chica said. “I used to tell him, but he said. ‘I need to work, I can't be at home scared.’ He's a good person.”

Villavicencio was working as a pizza delivery man for Nonna Delia's pizzeria in Queens when he took an order of pizzas to the Fort Hamilton military base in the Bay Ridge neighborhood of Brooklyn Friday around 11 a.m., according to the Ft. Hamilton public information office. Chica said he showed the officers his city identification card, as he usually did when he delivered pizzas there. But because the ID was not a Department of Defense ID, the officers directed Villavicencio to obtain a day pass from the visitors office.
