No leader is forever, Macron says as 'G6' gears up to confront Trump
Source: Reuters
OTTAWA (Reuters) - French President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday no leader was forever, suggesting a more confrontational attitude towards U.S. President Donald Trump as leaders from the Group of Seven countries prepare to clash on trade at a summit in Canada.
You say the U.S. President doesnt care at all. Maybe, but nobody is forever, he told a news conference flanked by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The six countries of the G7 without the United States, are a bigger market taken together than the American market.
There will be no world hegemony if we know how to organize ourselves. And we dont want there to be one, Macron said. Macron had so far taken a more conciliatory tone with Trump, whom he calls his friend. On Thursday, although he said it was important to remain civil, he signaled his intention to close ranks with other leaders.
Maybe the American president doesnt care about being isolated today, but we dont mind being six, if needs be, Macron added. Because these six represent values, represent an economic market, and more than anything, represent a real force at the international level today, he said.

But I get your point ... Trump said the same thing about Hillary's emails at one of the debates.

(7,541 posts)Trump has never understood this perspective. He only knows how to 'negotiate' from a position of overwhelming dominance...in reality he does not understand how to negotiate, only demand. He wants to re-negotiatate treaties but has no leverage so he feels he has to take things away from his opposites or damage them prior to any 'negotiation' taking place so that he perceives himself as being in charge.

The last time Democrats had a majority, somehow, "defeat from the jaws of victor?" The Turtle was able to do a lot of damage.

(5,210 posts)Never.
We will emerge from the Trump era -- however long it takes -- essentially disabled and hobbling. Oh, we'll do moderately okay economically (eventually), but our world leadership will be over. The rest of the world will have stepped into the void and taken up the mantle, and figured out how to do things without us. And they will, and will enjoy it so much they won't give that mantle back. Ever.

What could he possibly have to contribute? He's like a two year old toddler-can't take him anywhere because he's a lloron, a crybaby...and, if he doesn't get all the attention, his way--he has a tantrum. Be a team player WITH the rest of the world, Donald, or get left behind. I just wish it was only you facing that fate, and not all the rest of us with you.
Macron is right - and very smart. He's evidently concluded that they might as well just cut their losses and move on, and work around us. And build something new without us. He's probably realized that there's no real work-together solution with a so-called "leader" like trump. trump is only going to disrupt everything, ignore any rules or collegial mutually-beneficial structures, and break whatever is valuable, lying and deceiving and slick-talking as he goes along his merry way. For what purpose, I haven't the faintest frickin' idea.
I feared, from the beginning of this nightmare, that by the time The Donald was done, we weren't going to have a friend in the world. Feels like we're well on our way to that, now. Despite what trump wants to keep deluding himself into believing, Putin is NOT our friend. He never will be our friend. Neither are those dictators and strongmen and "presidents for life" whom trump admires and wants to be like.

Putin is laughing his ass off right now. I hope all the people who bought the propaganda they were fed have to pay a steep price for their ignorance. I'm just sorry for all the rest of us suffering along with them.
