The mother of an 8-year-old Palmdale boy who died after being tortured was sentenced to life in prison on Thursday, while her boyfriend was sentenced to death, marking the end of a high-profile trial that drew attention to severe flaws in L.A. County's child welfare system.

During the sentencing in downtown L.A., the judge said the 2013 killing of Gabriel Fernandez was "worse than animalistic," because "even animals know how to take care of their young."

"In my almost 20 years on the bench in this court, this case is without a doubt the most aggravated and egregious case this court has ever witnessed," Los Angeles Superior Court Judge George Lomeli said.

The boy's mother, Pearl Fernandez, 34, in February had pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree murder and admitted the special circumstance allegation of intentional murder by torture. Her sentence comes without the possibility of parole.

Gabriel was taken to a hospital in May 2013 when he stopped breathing. He had a cracked skull and broken ribs, with B.B. pellets in his lung and groin. He was declared brain dead and died two days later.

The prosecutor in Aguirre's case, Deputy District Attorney Jon Hatami, argued that Aguirre systematically abused and tortured Gabriel for months because he thought the boy was gay.

Four social workers have been charged in connection with the torture death of Gabriel Fernandez, the 8-year-old Palmdale boy who died in 2013 after he was allegedly beaten by his mother and her boyfriend, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced Thursday.

Stefanie Rodriguez and Patricia Clement, along with their respective supervisors, Kevin Bom and Gregory Merritt, have each been charged with one felony count of child abuse and one felony count of falsifying public records, prosecutors said in a news release.

The arrest warrant was filed on March 28, the release stated.

Gabriel died on May 24, 2013, after being doused in pepper spray, forced to eat cat feces and his own vomit, and locked in a cabinet with a sock stuffed in his mouth, according to court records obtained by the Los Angeles Times.

6. I'm glad they got stiff sentnces...

it's absolutely horrifying how many children are abused like that and in less horrific yet damaging ways. i was an abused child and enslaved by my father for nearly a decade, I wanted to die then or be taken from my parent, I ended up liberating myself and the three siblings who would have been abused after I was gone.

Stories like this make me think it will never end, our species has gone off the rails as far as having a purpose on this planet, no matter what you think or believe, this is fact and this story is a glaring example.

about the few good people. Would be nice if there were more of them. Now in my 60s, with my mom in her early 90s those issues still affect our family dynamics, guess they always will since some of my siblings still need counseling to this day.

It's heartbreaking. He was so innocent and helpless. Can you imagine being abused like that at the hands of people who were supposed to protect you? Who the world is telling you you're supposed to love? He probably made them Mother's Day and Father's Day cards at school. It's horrific. I'm so sad.
