Senators introduced bipartisan legislation that attempts to counter President Donald Trumps promise to save Chinese telecommunications giant ZTE after it violated US sanctions laws.
(snip)
The Senate bill, brought by Democrats and Republicans, would restore the penalties placed on ZTE for violating US sanctions and once again ban American companies from doing business with it and another major Chinese firm, Huawei Technologies. The legislation would also prohibit the government from subsidising ZTE, Huawei, or any affiliates and subsidiaries as a way of getting around export controls.
Democratic Senators Chuck Schumer and Chris Van Hollen were joined in introducing the bill by a somewhat surprising face - normally reliable ally of Mr Trump Republican Senator Tom Cotton. (snip) Co-sponsors include Republican Senators Marco Rubio and Susan Collins, and Democrats Richard Blumenthal and Bill Nelson.
(snip)
They offered the legislation as an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), a defence policy bill Congress passes every year. The Senate is expected to debate the NDAA next week at which time it will be determined if the ZTE amendment can come up for a vote.

(22,133 posts)average American worker and then he turns around and does this for ZTE. What the blank!? Another broken promise to the American worker that rump promised so much to, e.g., good things will happen w/ rump in power for the American worker that we won't know what to do, blah blah blah...
I wonder how many American companies ZTE underbid/or priced its items under cost?
If ZTE is like a regular Chinese company (or many of them), they are owned by state apparatus / government people (like in Russia) where many of the state's assets were scooped up at fireside prices (due to sweetheart deals) and also, are heavily supported/subsidized by the government (not a 'true' business entity).
This is another wedge issue that rump is definitely on the wrong side of, and also points to a obvious conflict of interest, otherwise why did rump favor ZTE so much all of a sudden? Greed and money also seems to drive rump, which clearly is a conflict of interest.
I wouldn't be surprised that rump will use an executive order to bypass any Congressional oversight on this ZTE mess. This would clearly signify the end of the rump honeymoon and spell numerous problems for rump (and he won't acknowledge it, but lie and cheat his way through the whole thing, his usual pattern).

(11,885 posts)Are almost to the point where they realize he's going to bypass them , and make them powerless. Watch how long before he raises sanctions for putin anyway, ignoring them completely, and what he'll use to bypass them will be more of the same. He'll find a way to go around them and they'll be pissed but he'll do the same to them as he's done everywhere he goes, he corrupts the system to get whatever he wants (or for putin), and this again will be the case, with this Chinese company, and with putins sanctions, and just like he's doing to the rule of law right now. If they don't stand up to stop and remove him soon, he'll destroy this country as we know for others, and for himself to profit from , from doing it to us. He's no patriot, just the opposite.

(4,847 posts)For Trump there is no offense which can not be healed by a monetary transaction - unless you are Hillary.
Besides the fine, the $400 million to be held in the event of a future breach (sounds a little like bail) and the US inspectors which he proposes, we do not know how the Trump organization will profit from the deal - yet.

(26,293 posts)The Repugnants have no intention of actually blocking ZTE rather they are are going to take a look at who on their side is running this year to get elected for another term and then they are going to check what the poll numbers are in those states for Donald.
If Donald polls high they will tell most of those Senators to vote No and if Donald is polling low then they will tell most of them to vote Yes.
In the end they will rig it so it atleast gets enough votes to pass it however they will make sure there will not be enough of them supporting it so Donald can veto it and then they will go back to the business of crushing the poor, disabled and elderly not to mention the middle class or what little remains of it.
