Trump calls for readmitting Russia to G-7 four years after it was expelled for its role in Crimean c

Source: WaPo

President Trump said Russia should be readmitted to the Group of Seven leading economies, breaking with other world leaders who have insisted Moscow remain ostracized following its involvement in the 2014 Crimean crisis.

Trump’s comments, made as he was departing to Canada for the annual G-7 summit, have the potential to further upend talks with other world leaders. U.S. officials believe Russia interfered in the 2016 election, and part of this year’s G-7 summit was supposed to focus on protecting democracies from foreign meddling.

Trump has sought to improve relations between the United States and Russia since taking office. The U.S. government and other nations have imposed strict sanctions on Russia related to its involvement in Crimea, and those penalties remain in effect.
This is a developing story. It will be updated.

LA MALBAIE, Quebec (Reuters) - New Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte threw his weight on Friday behind U.S. President Donald Trump’s call for Russia to be included once more into Group of Seven meetings.

“I agree with President (Trump). Russia should be re-admitted into the G8. It is in the interests of everyone,” Conte said in a tweet from Canada where he is due to make his international debut as Italian leader at a summit of world power leaders.

The Italian government, backed by the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement and far-right League, has already signalled it is likely to adopt a pro-Russian line in its foreign policy and has called for an end to economic sanctions on Moscow.

Some of us remember the Cold War when we were told a million times our conflict with them was about them being commies.

So now that their communism is dead, our conflict with them reverts to the more mundane and obvious: they have something we want or we want them to obey our banks and corporations.

The rest is bullshit.

If we cared about human rights, democracy, or even the safety of average Americans, the first place we would have invaded after 9/11 would have been Saudi Arabia.

That we didn't tells you that when our government raises those concerns about other countries, however true the accusations may be, they are excuses not true motives.
