Voto Latino aiming to register 1 million new voters by 2020

Source: Politico

By EDWARD-ISAAC DOVERE 06/12/2018 05:00 AM EDT

Saying that they feel Latinos are in President Donald Trump’s “crosshairs,” Voto Latino, the group committed to engaging and empowering Latinos in politics, is preparing to roll out a campaign to hit 1 million registered voters by 2020.

The roll-out of the new program comes as Voto Latino adds three members to its board, including former Housing Sec. Julián Castro, who is eyeing a presidential bid of his own in 2020.

The new initiative, called Somos Mas (We Are More), will focus on seven states: Texas, Nevada, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Florida and California, including on 27 college campuses spread among them. They’ll also have a digital effort concentrated on North Carolina, Ohio, Georgia and Pennsylvania.

“I gently remind people that once Latinos register, their chance of coming out to vote is 80 percent,” said María Teresa Kumar, Voto Latino’s president and CEO. “The game is going to be played in seven states.”

Sometimes I get the feeling that as Dems we are almost always behind the curve.

We play catch up instead of leading and innovating. Good news, but we all knew a racist, anti-immigrant dotard won the election in 2016.

Oh well. I sincerely wish them all the best.

get their thinking caps on and start being leaders, innovators pushing the limits of technology and stop playing catch up.

I heard the reps are already using AI to both target voters more effectively AND suppress the vote.

Voto Latino is not a Dem organization. It simply aims to register voters no matter who they support. (Not saying this is a bad thing but some may assume it's a Dem GOTV organization which it isn't).

Don't see anything on their website about "vote drives".

1M spread over 7 states might flip a state legislative seat or two; but the effects will be minimal in states where it is needed the most: AZ, FL and TX. I guess it is a start, if nothing else.

It's not specifically a register and vote for Dems effort. Just an fyi.

I wish them the best and may send a few bucks their way as well but I'll do a little research to see who the get-out-Latino-Dem-voter organizations are.

I hope getting people where they can a state-issued ID is on their list too. Republicans keep thinking of more reasons not to allow people to vote.
