McConnell: US 'Must Be Prepared' To Reinstate 'Maximum Pressure' On NK

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday congratulated President Donald Trump on the major step he took in meeting with North Korean ruler Kim Jong-un in Singapore. But, speaking from the Senate floor, McConnell hedged any optimism about the summit.
Resolving this 65-year-old international challenge will take a great deal of hard work, the Senate leader said.
I support the goals contained in the joint statement, and I remain supportive of the administrations stated position, he added, of complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
Should North Korea not prove willing to follow through, he said, we and our allies must be prepared to restore the policy of maximum pressure.

(11,348 posts)When asked in the press conference about Trump's admiration for Kim considering he murders peoples family's Trump glowed about how "hard of a situation the 26 year old had when he started" and about "how tough he had to be".
Trump loves how in Russia and NK, they don't have to deal with these Press Problems like in the US.

Kim killed his half brother using nerve agent. He's executed men by flame thrower and mortar rounds. He's killed much of his own family. He executed his mentor. His people starve; North Korea is a giant prison camp. This is a disgrace. Those who rehabilitate Kim are a disgrace.

Work work work.
Or did I miss something?

For months, Trump has been railing against presidents past, accusing them of an inexcusable failure to solve the nuclear threat emanating from the North. On Tuesday, he patted himself on the back for signing a "comprehensive" pact with Kim paving a path toward denuclearization, but the contours appeared far weaker than even his predecessors' failed deals.
... There was irony in the fact that Trump and Kim made direct reference in their agreement to the so-called Panmunjom Declaration between Moon and Kim, with its weak, reheated commitment to denuclearization that lacked specifics at how the rivals would get there. Similarly, there was nothing specific on nukes in Tuesday's declaration - and no joint affirmation of the goal of "complete, verifiable and irreversible" dismantlement that Trump's aides had previously made the litmus test for success.

I hope Trump is able to negotiate lasting peace in North Korea, but Im still highly skeptical. Its not even close to over yet, and people are celebrating.
