Des Moines Register front page warns Iowa could lose up to $624M from Chinese tariffs
Source: The Hill
The Des Moines Register is warning Iowa residents that newly announced tariffs from the Trump administration could cost farmers in the state as much as $624 million, blasting out the headline on the newspaper's front page Saturday.
The newspaper, which reaches more than 140,000 Iowans in the state Trump won by just under 10 points, declares on its front page that the cost of Trump's moves to punish China for intellectual property theft would begin to "add up" for Iowa farmers, according to a copy obtained by the Newseum.
The Des Moines Register did not endorse Trump in the election, instead encouraging Iowans to vote for his Democratic challenger Hillary Clinton.
"Perhaps Iowa farmers' biggest fear is becoming a harsh reality," the article declares.

(10,437 posts)States with large exports...as we know, the farm vote heavily favored trump. Tariffs cut in our exports AND is a tax on what we consume. So loss of market share will be huge as almost everything we sell can be bought elsewhere while the stuff we buy can't be produced here for years...as no means of production exist..at the moment

(2,396 posts)you've laid it out.
Just from reading around, it seems like most of the Ag Boards are being realistic about the losses (warnings) but a lot of the farmers still support trump.
I think a lot of the Ag tariffs don't take effect until July 6 so the farmers were still confident trump's policies wouldn't hurt them.
But there's so many moving parts that change from day to day, trump's signature move.

(49,036 posts)Plus Trump-Republicon tariffs on imported steel from allies in Canada and EU and Mexico are making farm machinery and trucks more expensive.
And then there is the coming Trump Slump in the economy because Iowa is not the only state affected. Plus tourism is down 4-7%.

(13,158 posts)seems like a losing strategy. instead they are doing what is always done in trade wars: retaliating with tarrifs.

The people who voted for Trump are about to receive the rewards of that decision. Alas, so will the rest of us. They say a rising tide lifts all boats. Well, the tide is going out and a lot of keels are about to touch the sea floor.
I used to think all we would need to do is survive four years until we can vote Trump out. Then a Democratic President could (as usual) pick up the pieces. I now think that he'll do so much damage to our economy and global reputation that it'll take years, if not longer, to sort things out.
When Great Depression Part Two strikes, we'll all be suffering together. The galling thing is that Trump supporters will blame it all on the Democrats and keep right on voting for the GOP.
It's fucking infuriating, but this is the reality of 2018 America. We could have had President Hillary Clinton, but... her emails!

(37,648 posts)I feel for the ones who didn't vote for Trump. And the farmers, who will be the ones to take the hit. But that will have a snowball effect throughout the state. Many small businesses depend on those farmers as customers.

Along with groupies in Iowa's legislative and executive branches. It's to the point that I'm thinking of leaving Iowa once I'm done with school. Heck with these people. They made their goddamn bed by voting GOP and now it's time for them to lie in the fucking thing.
