Beto O'Rourke leads protest against separation of immigrant families

Source: ElPasoTimes

Hundreds of people from across the region and other parts of the country joined U.S. Rep. Beto O'Rourke, D-El Paso, as he led a protest Sunday in Tornillo against the separation of immigrant families.

O'Rourke said, "We're wanting to make sure that everyone in this country knows what is happening here, in their name, in Tornillo, where kids have traveled 2,000 miles, some alone, some with their parents, are being held in detention camps, tent cities that have just been constructed over the course of this last week."

He added, "We want to make sure we help this country to make the right decision, and part of that is knowing what's going on in the first place."

He said, "This is a decision for the country to make. Either we are going to be a country of detention camps for kids, of walls, of sending the National Guard to the border, or we are going to be better than that. But it's not decided by any means, and though we've been able to figure it out in the past, doesn't mean we're going to figure it out this time. It's on us. No one is going to do this for us.

Senator Joe Kennedy is also participating in the protest.

GOP Congressman Will Hurd says that the Tornillo tent city, now with a capacity of 400, could expand to 4,000 beds for immigrant children.

The tent city site in Tornillo was visited Friday night by U.S. Rep. Will Hurd, who said he is disappointed in the lack of information coming from the Trump administration about its new policy of separating children from their parents at the border.

Hurd, a Republican whose district includes the port of entry in Tornillo, said: "At the end of the day, in the land of the free and the home of the brave, we should not be using children as deterrents when it comes to our broken immigration system."

As of Friday, the shelter in Tornillo had 400 beds prepared and Hurd said it is expected to hit its targeted capacity of 360 people shortly. Hurd said federal officials are evaluating whether to increase the number of beds to 4,000.

Tornillo, Texas is somewhere in the desert where people don't go about 20 miles outside of El Paso. I've been in El Paso and Juarez, the rest is BFE to the outside world. This concentration tent facility will be somewhere outside Tornillo.

This picture of the Tornillo area doesn't show the killer summer heat out here. A child just collapsed at bat, from the heat, at our grandson's baseball game in Arkansas (we were following on line). An ambulance took him to the hospital to make sure he was stable. It's full summer in the southwest. These children will be forced to shelter all day inside tents, with temperatures outside routinely over 100 degrees as summer progresses.

This is OUR atrocity and OUR shame.

'Screw' as in nuts and bolts - but still quite a coincidence, considering what Cheeto's doing to our democracy and the rule of law.

I wouldn't put it past these Brownshirts to have deliberately chosen the spot for its name, in case anyone doubted their intent.

Or close enough. The death camps were in eastern Europe. Earlier in Germany came the concentration camps, where people were slowly starved and worked to death, but with a few carefully set up tours of charming streets populated with Jews given new clothes and scripts to show the outside world how well treated the inmates were.

The same template. Same Nazis.

We have the collective wisdom of years with our greats to lead the way, guard their path and hand these two the keys.

But wait..I have to have my fav Sen Kamala in the line-up too.
We have A LOT of superior 2020 candidates.
I do love where these two are taking the future, however!

It is time.

The last time I saw Americans with guns and uniforms putting people (detainees) into tents to be detained (imprisoned) was during OIF3 when I spent a year in Abu Ghraib prison. Our motto in the in-processing center read "Winning the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people one detainee at a time". Rod Serling couldn't have put it better. If terrifying children and making them wail when separated from their families makes you feel safer as an American, then I can only say with all the venom I can muster - Fuck You with a rusty rake!
