Stephanie Miner to Make Independent Bid to Challenge Cuomo
Source: New York Times
Stephanie Miner, the former mayor of Syracuse and a former top official in the New York Democratic Party, is kicking off an independent run for governor, the latest surprise twist in Gov. Andrew M. Cuomos bid for re-election.
Ms. Miner, once an ally of Mr. Cuomos, became something of an outlier in Democratic circles when she emerged as a vocal and persistent critic of the governor and his policies, beginning five years ago and culminating now in a direct challenge as he seeks a third term.
I cannot be a silent witness to what I think is a corrupt political culture that is hurting real people every day, Ms. Miner said in an interview announcing her run.
Her entry adds intrigue to a governors race already rife with it. Polls show Mr. Cuomo with comfortable leads over Cynthia Nixon, the actress and education activist, in the Democratic primary and Marcus J. Molinaro, the Dutchess County executive and the expected Republican nominee, in a general election matchup.

(9,512 posts)I think Cuomo is very corrupt. I live in NY and I hate many of his policies. But risking not having a Democrat as governor is unthinkable in the current situation.
On the other hand, when will we ever be able to vote our consciences if the dems are always better than the repubs but nowhere near where we want them to be.
I was just posting about trump testing limits of what he can get away with. It's the same with the dems. How far right can we move, they say, without totally alienating the progressive base? And when we do alienate the progressive base we'll just use the scare tactic of "the republican boogie man." When does it stop? This prevents us from moving left and this is the game played by the two party system, otherwise known as class war. They're winning.

(2,437 posts)As a NY Dem I feel the same about Cuomo. He may not be our ideal but it would be suicide to weaken him and dilute the vote. I didn't like him privatizing Long island's electric power provider and his START-UP NY was a fiasco. Cost the tax payers $53 million dollars to create 1,100 jobs statewide and only 42 jobs on Long Island. Plus, those companies don't pay taxes for 10 years. That's bullshit!
That being said, he's better than any Republican and I would vote for him enthusiastically. We need the entire power structure in place to take out the Trump crime family.

A potential Molinaro victory would be horrible for New Yorkers in this age of Trump.
