Trump to Propose Government Reorganization, Targeting Safety Net Programs

Source: New York Times

WASHINGTON — President Trump plans to propose a reorganization of the federal government as early as Thursday that would shuffle key community development, housing and food programs to new departments, where they could be easier to cut or contain, according to administration officials briefed on the proposal.

The plan, which will most likely face significant opposition in Congress from Democrats and some Republicans, includes relocating many social safety net programs into a new megadepartment, which would replace the Department of Health and Human Services and probably include the word “welfare” in its title.

Mr. Trump and his budget director, Mick Mulvaney, the architect of the plan, have sought to redefine as welfare subsistence benefit programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, and housing aid. It is part of a rebranding effort, championed by conservative think tanks and House Republicans, to link them to unpopular direct-cash assistance programs that have traditionally been called welfare.

“They have been using the word welfare because it is pejorative,” said Elaine Waxman, a senior fellow in the Income and Benefits Policy Center at the Urban Institute, a nonpartisan Washington think tank. “The programs you can call welfare are actually very small in comparison to SNAP, which is an income support necessary to help families, workers and millions of kids.”
At the heart of the plan is an attempt to shift SNAP, which serves more than 42 million poor and working-class Americans, to the new agency from the Agriculture Department. Conservative think tanks, including the Heritage Foundation and Koch-related entities, have long sought to de-link food aid from agriculture in hopes of cutting costs. MORE...

>Mr. Mulvaney and White House officials have closely guarded details of their plan, sharing them with political appointees but not career staff members at cabinet departments. Administration officials said the blueprint for the plan was a 2017 list of reorganization recommendations produced by the conservative Heritage Foundation.
The group’s wish list includes the elimination of a handful of well-known federal programs, including the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the Export-Import Bank.

The GOP end game, gut Social Security and Medicare.

Time for me to request a call to action from AARP. The only thing more sacred than their "issues" voting is the fear of losing those government benefits.

has his or her work cut out for him/her. As will the "new" Senate & House, as they work to undo these nightmare actions.

People expect quick effects once the Mueller report comes out but it probably won't be released for a long time yet, there seems to be more and more criminals and crimes they have to incorporate every week, and once it does come out that is just the beginning of a long, drawn out war with all the Trump-holes fighting tooth and nail to remain in control.

We are a long way from regaining control and normalizing things.

My ex-wife who carries an oxygen tank and lives on less than $9k a year gets $15 a month in SNAP. Maybe she can pick up garbage along the freeway for Trump's amusement. Her 88 year old mother is in a similar position, but healthier, so she can maybe work an assembly line somewhere.

My youngest, a single parent of three boys and no spousal support, works his fingers to the bones to make ends meet. He too gets minimal aid from the government.

The GOP's unofficial motto is "If you don't work, you don't eat". Mine is "Fuck You Donald Trump".

If fact, anytime you see a headline that involves what Trump plans to do, replace Trump with Putin, and suddenly, it all makes sense.

This is why the Republicans tolerate Trump. They know that he has no shame, isn't afraid to do any shameless thing. No other Republican would have gone here. Not the Bushies. Not Reagan. These damned Ayn Randers are working away in the background.

"Reform," "strengthen" "revise", "Arbeit Macht Frei" ('Work sets you free') used for the opposite purpose, depending on your point of view.

With the investigations closing in and the possibility the GOP will lose control in November, they need to speed up the process of destroying the country.
