UPDATE: House GOP leaders abruptly postpone high-stakes vote on immigration bill

House Republican leaders abruptly postponed a high-stakes vote Thursday on GOP immigration legislation that appeared headed to defeat, despite President Trump's last-minute lobbying. Instead, Republicans planned to vote Friday in hopes that they could revise the bill and potentially persuade the last few holdouts, according to a senior Republican aide.

he Republican bill, negotiated between the conservatives and moderate wings of the party, sought to respond to a pair of brewing crises precipitated by Trump -- his decision to separate migrant children from their families at the southwest border and his cancellation of a program protecting young undocumented immigrants from deportation.

White House officials and Trump himself traveled to Capitol Hill this week seeking to force Congress to take action on immigration. But many GOP lawmakers saw the lobbying effort as abortive and perplexing, culminating in Trump tweeting Thursday morning that the Senate would reject anything the House passed, dampening House members' enthusiasm for taking a tough vote. The legislation would have provided a pathway to citizenship for young undocumented immigrants, imposed limits on legal immigration and provided $25 billion for Trump's border wall. The bill also would have kept migrant families together at the border in detention centers.

GOP leadership abandoned plans for a Thursday vote in the face of growing opposition from Republican conservatives and moderates. Word circulated of the decision just as the House rejected a more hard-line bill, 231-193.

GOP House leadership abruptly postpones vote on immigration bill in embarrassing retreat

by Washington Post Staff June 21 at 2:16 PM

Republicans faced growing opposition to their bill despite last-minute lobbying from President Trump.

In the face of defeat, Republicans decided prior to an emergency closed-door meeting with rank and file members to postpone the vote until Friday, according to a House GOP aide.

The bill, a compromise between Republican moderates and conservatives, would have imposed limits on legal immigration, provided a pathway to citizenship to young undocumented immigrants and $25 billion for Trump's border wall.

The measure also would have kept migrant families together at the border, placing them in detention.

This is a developing story. It will be updated.

Until they force the return of the child hostages and babies, and get them out of their prisons before anything is done. Its inhumane not to.

The Republican Party is an evil fascist corrupt organization that is the enemy of the nation. They are intent on the destruction of the democracy and the establishment of an authoritarian dictatorship. This has been their goal for the last forty years. They are the enemy within that has undermined every aspect of our democracy. Trump's attacks on the courts, rule of law, freedom of the press, racism under the guise of nationalism must be repelled.
