While politicizing the anguish of families whose loved ones were killed by an undocumented immigrant, President Donald Trump on Friday said that Americans are better than immigrants.

“I always hear that, ‘Oh, no, the population is safer than the people that live in the country.’ You’ve heard that, fellas, right? You’ve heard that,” he said. “I hear it so much. And I say, ‘Is that possible?’ The answer is it is not true. You hear it is like they are better people than what we have, than our citizens. It is not true.”

Trump Holds ‘Permanent Separation’ Event Amid Family Separation Crisis

After a week of scrutiny over the Trump administration’s policy of family separation, a practice that was altered by executive order, President Donald Trump tried to change the narrative Friday by holding an event with the family members of people killed by undocumented immigrants.

The “permanent separation” event was a series of tragic stories from the left-behind relatives, telling the tales of how their loved ones were killed, and lavishing praise on Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.

Most of them clutched head shots of their dead loved that appeared to be signed by Trump. The event took place before a backdrop that emphasized “our borders” and “our communities.”

Using heavily nationalistic language, Trump said that “our citizens” are better than those trying to come in and that sanctuary cities will breed violence, drugs, and death at the hands of immigrants.

What the statistics say is that there is little difference in the two populations (immigrants and non-immigrants). Given that immigrants on average occupy the lower end of the economic spectrum, this is actually an amazing result.

No one is saying they are better. They are just like anyone else looking to make a life. Other than the language that they speak, they are no different than the prior waves of desperate people that have come to this country. They do not deserve to be treated abusively.

Nobody has ever said that immigrants are "better" than non-immigrants (notwithstanding the fact that a vast majority of us are descended from immigrants).

What people have said is that the proportion of immigrants who commit violent crimes is less than the equivalent proportion for citizens. That's statistically true.
