Canada Targets Whiskey, Toilet Paper in Trump Tariff Response

From mustard to motorboats, Canada’s about to fire back against Donald Trump on its national holiday.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will mark Canada’s 151st birthday Sunday by imposing tariffs on about C$19.4 billion ($14.6 billion) worth of U.S. imports in response to American levies on Canadian steel and aluminum that went into effect a month ago.

While the tariffs alone are unlikely to derail Canada’s expansion or boost overall inflation, they add to the growing tension between two of the world’s biggest trading partners. Talks over a new North American Free Trade Agreement have stalled, and Trump has threatened to impose additional duties on autos. Canada, meanwhile, is preparing fresh duties as early as next week on non-U.S. steel imports to prevent dumping.

“It’s regrettable that we have to engage in this kind of tit-for-tat trade war, but it’s been forced on us by Mr. Trump,” Toronto-based trade lawyer Lawrence Herman said in a phone interview. “Canada has no choice but to respond in accordance with the rules of international trade."

22. Speaking as an American expat living in Canada...

I am so glad I'm here and not back home. I can't claim to have foreseen the rise of Trump (my wife and I got married in 2011 and I moved up here in 2013), but the day after he was "elected" I decided to go for citizenship as soon as possible.

It's nice living in a sane country where, if I get sick, I go see the doctor and don't have to worry about how to pay for it. It's also nice living in a country where I don't have to wonder if every random yabo I see walking around is packing heat. The only real downside is that I have to keep explaining Trump's idiocy to my Canadian friends. It seems like every damn day brings some new stupidity from Dolt 45.

You may be right, that after production reduces because of less export demand, then prices in the US rise to old level or higher to maintain profits.

Meantime, Chinese have stopped buying soybeans from MidWest, a $13,000,000,000 (13 billion) a year loss. They are now buying from Brazil and Canada.

Investors won't bring money to the USA because of the instability.

Tourism is down 4 to 7 %. Normally a growth industry.

Instead of developing solar power technology to export goods to the rest of the world, the US will before long be importing, if it can find anyone willing to sell.

A few years back, I was working in an antique mall and talking to a young guy working there. He was in the local College Republican club and we were talking about health care. He was telling me about how bad the Canadian system was when a gentleman from Canada came up to ask a question. By his dress, one could tell he was well off. Then he took us outside to see his antique Packard he had on a trailer. Had to be worth a quarter million..So I asked him how he likes the Canadian Health system and if he wanted to change to ours. He said hell no, we love ours.

The kid hung his head and I had a big smile on my face.

I don't know any Canadian who'd want to have a healthcare system like yours. Ours isn't perfect, by any means, and I recently had to wait for a date for elective knee surgery for 3 months. However, while waiting I had 2 MRIs, numerous x-rays, pre-op visits with the orthopedic surgeon and anesthesiologist, blood tests, and then day surgery - all paid for by my taxes. I did not pay a cent for any of these (well, other than through my taxes).

Post-op physio, although I do pay up front per session, is covered by my employer-paid additional health insurance. This insurance includes a drug plan where I only pay a dispensing fee out of pocket, and dental.

In addition, as of January 1, 2018, all medication for youngsters is now covered from birth to the age of 24 (when the government considers you probably have a job).

Why would we want to give it up?

Oh, and a lot of Canadians I know, some of whom I would have thought were conservatives, are actively boycotting both travel to the US, as well as products from the US. BTW, Spanish lemons are fabulous, as I've found recently.

His wait was 6 months. All the quality surgeons in the US have wait times similar to OHIP. Unfortunately she had to settle for lesser and the quality of the job shows it.
