Oregon right-wingers clash with anti-fascists at march in Portland

Source: Reuters

U.S. JULY 1, 2018 / 12:45 AM / UPDATED 3 HOURS AGO

(Reuters) - Anti-fascist and right-wing activists clashed in Portland, Oregon on Saturday night as violence broke out during a march in support of a conservative Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate, media reported.

Scuffles broke out after anti-fascists pelted marchers from the right-wing Patriot Prayer group with eggs, water bottles and firecrackers, the Oregonian newspaper reported. The Patriot Prayer group’s founder Joey Gibson is running for the Senate.

Police made a handful of arrests from both sides, and officers seized utility knives, pepper spray and clubs, according to the newspaper.

A spokesperson for the Portland police could not be immediately reached for comment.

1. From The Oregonian: Portland Police revoke permit, declare riot as protesters clash downtown
Sun Jul 1, 2018, 03:48 AM
Jul 2018

Portland Police declared a riot Saturday after tensions between the right-wing Patriot Prayer group and local anti-fascist activists came to a head and broke out in violence.

The afternoon began with a permitted rally at Terry Schrunk Federal Plaza organized by Joey Gibson, U.S. Senate candidate for Washington and leader of the right-wing, Vancouver-based group.

A counter-demonstration by masked local anti-fascist groups gathered nearby among a heavy police presence. Officers seized weapons such as utility knives, clubs and chemical sprays, detaining several protesters early on.

...Portland Police made four arrests during the demonstrations, none of them connected to the events of the day.

2. Not the way it was reported on the evening news in Portland

Jul 2018

Traveling in Portland this week. Watched the coverage on the local evening news. Not sure of the accuracy of the evening news itself, but it was reported that the protesters were protesting immigration policy and the right wing group, Patriot Prayer group began scuffling. At some point the police pronounced it a riot and broke up the riot. The video clip showed police had cuffed or zip tied at least 2 individuals wearing jackets typical of those worn by skin heads.

I remember in high school that the skin heads at our school used to enjoy passing time by fighting with each other. I wonder how authentic the 'anti-fa' agitators are. The violence only feeds into the right-wing narratives necessary for their movement.

Right wing media is constantly reporting that the country is a right leaning country, with no liberal movement, but there are militant leftist anti-fa groups? Typical BS.

The most accurate looking coverage I found came from:

--Eder Campuzano | 503.221.4344
ecampuzano@oregonian.com

Campuzano reports that the event was permitted by the right-wing and that when the

There is a small information conflict in the middle of the article that indicates 4 total arrests for the day, but describes one of the arrests separate from 4 other arrests. Might be a typo. The arrests were supposedly not connected with any of the day's events.

The article also reported that there were 150 supporting the right wing Senate candidate who obtained the permit, half of the previous event, and 'a fraction' of last year's Trump rally.

Extremists attack peaceful protesters who are branded anti-fascists to maintain the media's narrative of false equivalency.

So, according to this, those horrible anti-fascist counter protesters started a violent attack against some peaceful right-wingers?

Who were these people that started the attack? Did anyone know them, or did they just show up?

It wouldn't be the first time in our country's history that outside forces infiltrated a peaceful protest in order to incite violence, giving the police an excuse to intervene and causing negative publicity for the left.

You can find lots of videos on youtube. I suppose it's always possible that it was outsiders trying to make them look bad, but if you look up some of the people involved it looks less likely to be the case. Some people on "our side" seem to think violence is the only way to stop these far-right nut jobs.

10. Again? Didn't this same thing happen last month in Portland?

I recall watching videos that made Portland look like it was in the midst of a civil war. I came to the conclusion that both sides were just looking to fight. I understand the anger with the stupid things "The Patriot Prayer" people say, but the so-called anti-fascists are not doing anyone any favors with the antics they pull. Not to mention some of them say some pretty stupid things too. Almost made me wonder if they were not right-wingers purposely trying to make them look bad. I suspect they were legit, as I was able to find a large social media presence of a couple of the loudest ones that confirmed they likely were who they claimed.

Here's a recent video. I find this depressing :/
