RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A commission studying what to do with the most prominent Confederate monuments in Richmond, Virginia, recommended Monday removing one honoring Confederate President Jefferson Davis.

The panel of historians, local officials and others that spent around a year studying and soliciting public input about the statues on the city's historic Monument Avenue also urged the addition of permanent signage with historical context near the monuments.

Further, it said leaders should consider adding new monuments that would reflect a "more inclusive" story of the city's history, the commission said in a more than 100-page report.

"In the course of the work, it became abundantly clear the majority of the public acknowledges Monument Avenue cannot and should not remain exactly as it is. Change is needed and desired," the report said.

(literally) and put him on ground level if people insist on keeping him there at all with "context markers". Then put an American flag up at the top.

A big white flag for surrender and a big scarlet T for Traitor on it should make it reflect history properly.

He was also a long-time enemy of the President of the United States Andrew Johnson.

Davis spent the rest of his life demanding his right to a public speedy trial. He was never tried. He was just left indicted the rest of his life.

The problem was what if he was found innocent? The Constitution was silent on the topic of secession, and the 10th Amendment says any right not delegated to the federal government belongs to the states.

So what happens if Davis is found innocent? Is the US army supposed to leave the Confederacy and say, oops, we're sorry? Better to never have the trial. We'll just call him a traitor and never try him.
