Capital Gazette received death threats, emails celebrating shooting after attack

Source: CBS News

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Maryland newspaper where five people were killed by a gunman last week said it received death threats and emails celebrating the shooting following the attack. The Capital Gazette said in a Sunday editorial that it would not forget being called "an enemy of the people."

President Trump has used identical language to describe the news media.

"The FAKE NEWS media ... is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American People!" Mr. Trump said on Twitter during the first month of his presidency.

In the immediate aftermath of Thursday's shooting, Mr. Trump posted to Twitter that his thoughts and prayers were with the victims and their families.

The Capital Gazette said people also called for the paper to fire a reporter who cursed on national television after seeing her friends shot.

The paper also thanked the community for its support following the shooting and said more than 800 people subscribed to its digital edition.

As a journalist and journalism teacher/professor with 34 years experience, I think it would be great if everyone on DU took just a short amount of time when they post to avoid the blanket "MSM" or "the media" condemnatory descriptor to describe journalism, whether the journalism is done well or done poorly.

Be specific when you reference malpractice by one of our members. It's the generalization and demonization of us that helps create a culture where it becomes OK for any politician — especially Hair Agolf Twitler — to call us "the enemy of the American people."

And that's a really uncomfortable, undemocratic and dangerous place to live.

I get it.

Judith Miller and the New York Times helped Dick Cheney lie us into the Iraq invasion, which killed my cousin. Do I discount, then, everything done by the Times? No.

The Washington Post did a shitty job of vetting Janet Cooke's story about Jimmy, the imaginary 8-year-old crack addict. Do I give up forever on the Washington Post? No.

The Lincoln Journal Star misspelled my last name in a high school baseball story 40 years ago. Have I consigned the Journal Star to the "MSM" or generally useless "media" pile? No.

Thanks for your support.

That's as specific as I get. That's as specific as I can get.

So yeah, I'll preface my condemnations with "ratings-driven news media..." despite that covering just under 93.5% of all media.

But again, it seems kinda blanket-y.

The New York Times and Washington Post are "ratings-driven" if you consider that they make money based on the number of readers and subscribers they have to sell to advertisers. The Denver Post and the Cedar Rapids Gazette are in the same boat. As are the Annapolis Capitol and the Fall City (Nebraska) Journal.

So they're bad?

Not to get too pissy, but the point of remembering the dead at the Capitol is supposed to be about reminding people that the vast majority of journalists are trying to do their jobs the best they can and don't deserve to be generally labeled as "enemies" or — your word — "rancid."

in light of what Trump has said about the media, don't you think you are posting this plea for civility in the wrong place? Try Fox or the other Right wing outlets and see what their responses are. We didn't start this fire, you know.

And blanket statements about the "media" and their alleged complicity or worthlessness is quite common at DU, too.

Take care.

Either they continue to be low lifes or they actually practice their claims of what it means to be civil. You can't have calls for civility and then turn around and threaten to kill anyone you don't agree with.

- A Brief History of 'Lügenpresse,' the Nazi-era Predecessor to Trump's 'Fake News' -

Used in World War I to attack enemy propaganda, the phrase 'lying press' resurfaced under the Nazis and during the 2014 anti-immigrant movement in Germany is now staple of Trump's rhetoric.

The sense of panic and anger in the mainstream media, the conservative Fox News included, is reasonable. The accusation of “fake news” or “lying press” has an ominous precedent, tracing back to the history of the German phrase “Lügenpresse.”

(At a campaign rally in October 2016, in Cleveland, Ohio, the Atlantic’s Rosie Grey even caught two Trump supporters on tape using the original German word. “Lügenpresse! That’s what you are,” one white man shouts, coaching another on how to say the term, and elaborates: “You’re all in bed with the Clintons. You’re all bought and paid for, every one of you.”) https://www.haaretz.com/us-news/the-ominous-nazi-era-precedent-to-trump-s-fake-news-attacks-1.5438960

Interesting since he never prays (unless surrounded by Evangelical ministers), and is apparently incapable of rational thought.

He's straight up said that he never asks for forgiveness because he "never does anything wrong." He legit believes that he doesn't need to ask God to forgive him, because he doesn't sin.

Then you look over at the evangelicals who supposedly believe in the Bible 100%. In the Book of Romans Paul writes that "...all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." There's also the doctrine of original sin, as well.

By rights they should be calling Trump a blasphemer for claiming to be perfect and not needing God's forgiveness. Instead, they gather round him to pray and give him some of that good old-time laying on of hands! It boggles the mind.

It almost makes one think that they'll overlook Trump's (many) shortcomings, just as long as he helps them overturn Roe v. Wade, and check off a few other items on their list. Charlatans, all of them. Jesus wept.
