A Georgia Boy Scout experienced racial bullying while on a camping trip. The boy, who is the son of an Ethiopian immigrant was called the N-word, and had rocks thrown at him by Boy Scout members of another troop.
The 14-year-old boy, who is a member of Scouts Troop 10 from Johns Creek, Georgia was on a week long camping trip in Alabama. Members of Boy Scouts Troop 76 from Vestavia Hills, Ala., were camping next to them and began using racial slurs to bully the young boy.
The mother, who wished not to be identified, confirmed to AL.com that the boys threw rocks at her son.
It upsets me that this is that boys summer camp memory, said Leanne Potts, a mother whose son belongs to Troop 10.

This is so disturbing

But it looks like the underlying attitude has been around much longer.

(11,518 posts)I currently live in the south, and have also lived in the north. Sadly I've witnessed bigotry everywhere I've been, it's not just concentrated in one part of the country.
It's clear that bigots are showing their asses much more freely now that one of their own occupies the White House.

(9,688 posts)the opposite of what a leader should be doing. Great leaders - REAL leaders lift people up to their higher selves.
You-know-who does the opposite: he brings out the worst in our citizens, and debases everyone who is associated with him.
The worst of the worst.
I can't believe that ~40% of our citizens STILL approve of the "job" he is doing. It should be 4%.
Yes, disturbing, for sure.

I guess scouts has changed a lot since I was in and I suppose every troop is different. Most of the boys in my troop were misfits like I was. We didn't act like this. My dad was scout master and he'd have knocked me one had I behaved this way.

To hate and fear,
You've got to be taught
From year to year,
It's got to be drummed
In your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught.
You've got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made,
And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade,
You've got to be carefully taught

Sorry, feeling pessimistic today.

(3,185 posts)The ones who weren't involved should be reassigned to other troops as appropriate and Troop 76 disbanded. The kids who weren't involved, but just had the misfortune to be in the troop with these little assclowns, should be permitted to continue participating in the Scouts, in my opinion. It's unfair to punish the entire group unless the entire group took part in the assault.
Whether he was actively involved or just turned a blind eye, the Scoutmaster should be formally censured by the national organization, stripped of any commendations he's received, and then bounced out of Scouts as well. He was supposed to be acting as a role model for these kids, and he clearly failed miserably. He was also supposed to be supervising these kids, so at the absolute bare minimum he was negligent.
Apart from consequences in the Boy Scouts, the kids who took part in this incident should face criminal charges as appropriate. I'd say assault at the very least, potentially assault with a deadly weapon, since thrown rocks can kill. Then there are potential hate crimes and civil rights issues.
It's beyond depressing that we've reached a place where children are committing assault and hate crimes, but here we are. I don't blame you for feeling pessimistic. But as my dad says, "Where there's life, there's hope of change." Keep your chin up, if not for your own sake, then for your kids, grandkids and new great-grandkid. We'll get through this together, as Americans!

(81,428 posts)Some Scouts - not the ones from Alabama - were wearing "Make America Great Again" caps at the camp, she said. President Donald Trump campaigned on that slogan and often used harsh rhetoric against immigrants.
Dr. Rob Spiegel, a Birmingham physician who is the scoutmaster for Troop 76, affiliated with Liberty Crossings United Methodist Church, said the mid-June incident at Camp Woodruff is being overblown.
"Things happen at camp," Spiegel said. "There's a lot of misinformation."
He denied that members of Troop 76 threw rocks at a black Boy Scout from Troop 10.
"The rocks are not accurate," Spiegel said.
Spiegel said he spoke to the Boy Scout who was allegedly bullied. "I talked to that child," he said.
Asked if Scouts from Troop 76 had used the 'N-word," Spiegel declined to confirm or deny that allegation.

(2,199 posts)from an old Eagle Scout, "I'm sorry for your camp experience." Unfortunately we have racists in the BSA and troops and troop leaders can be stupid from time to time. Oftentimes, the boys tend to emulate their adult leaders and older Scouts. In this case the Alabama troop was offensive and contrary to all we try to teach and lead young men and now young women to become, how we teach about good citizenship and to "help other people at all times". The troop I grew up in would not have tolerated this behavior or attitude. The troop my two Eagle Scout sons grew up in would have defended the young Ethiopian-American Scout. My eldest son was picked on at his first summer camp by some kids from another troop and the older boys in our troop defended Zach and the bullying stopped. They didn't include our Scoutmasters, but the adults knew our kids had protected and took up for my son. Maybe not a perfect solution, but it turned out ok for my son.
Much of our current lack of civility in America is a direct result of President Trumps words, and actions. He has allowed the racists to spout utter trash and loathing on a constant basis for any and all people that are different. What President Trump spoke at last summers Nation Jamboree was horrific, embarassing and not at all in step with the meanings, values, and standards we in the BSA hold. He has no morals or redeemable values. He is trying to burn down our nation one day at a time. He will not succeed, because there are good men and women across our nation that will eventually beat this disgusting human being. Take heart young Ethiopian-American Scout, not all Scouts and Scout Troops are racist. You are welcomed to my North Carolina troop anytime.
