In Moscow, US senator hopes for "new day" in US-Russia ties

MOSCOW (AP) — The head of a U.S. congressional delegation visiting Russia said Tuesday he hopes for "a new day" in repairing relations between Russia and the U.S.

Senator Richard Shelby, a Republican from Alabama, met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow two weeks before the countries' presidents are to meet in Helsinki.

"We come here realizing that we have a strained relationship, but we could have a better relationship between the U.S. and Russia, because we have some common interests around the world that we could hopefully work together on," Shelby told Lavrov at the start of their meeting. "We could be competitors — we are competitors — but we don't necessarily need to be adversaries."

Also Tuesday, Lavrov spokes on the phone with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to discuss the July 16 meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The State Department and the Russian Foreign Ministry said they also discussed issues related to Syria and North Korea.

we guaranteed their borders as a sovereign nation.

Appeasing an invader strikes me as one of the most chicken-shit things an American political party has ever done.

And it will end badly, history shows.

Not the same as the old Boss. Who was actually American.

"but we don't necessarily need to be adversaries"

It seems to me Russia had made it a necessity that they are an adversary!.....

Oh, wait. They haven't yet meddled in our 2018 mid-terms. They can be an adversary next year....

in the 2016 elections"? That must have been the elephant in the room - while Shelby waffled about "new days", no one asked him to be explicit on what the "old day" was? About how he was going to ensure that Russia changed? Or about how he hadn't got a fucking clue, in reality?

any more than it did Hitler. Although my husband's Jewish, at this point I feel it's a shame that Hitler and his party are most known for the Holocaust because those enormous atrocies obscure the great similarities between Hitler's techniques in his of seizure power and those of Putin and of Trump and those trying to ride him to power.

Maybe the KGOP thinks that removing human rights, the advocacy of democracy and justice from our State Department now allows for their common interests with Putin to move forward.

It appears that their common interests are allowing the most wealthy to ignore the rule of law, so they can normalize corruption and ethics violations.

The Trump administration seems to just ignore the Constitution, the courts, science, decades of US policy and even common decency

They also seem to share intolerance for refugees, and supporting tax avoidance, turning a blind eye towards money laundering, getting rid of government interference, investigations and attacking the free press.

Ignoring international laws and courts, the militarizing of the police and secret policing instead of community policing.

Nepotism, cronyism, and so on

Make no mistake, the most greedy and corrupt haven't had enough with their dismantling of our democratic institutions they have tasted blood and are working themselves into a frenzy of greed

Putin thru his oligarch infrastructure has already funneled over 7 million to GOP (ex McConnell, Rubio, Walker campaigns) that we know of. The dark money, tax free sewage pipe of the Kochs is closely protected by them all but I suspect wallows in Putin cash. And of course the NRA is already a known Putin dark dump.

It's become obvious that the GOP, Kochs (& along with other vile GOP oligarchs in waiting) the NRA as well as the Sado Christian leadership all have the same goals as Putin/Trump: To end American democracy & achieve a totalitarian state. They seek both total power and total ownership over our people and our public assets.

Republican/Russian relations. No democrats what-so-ever were invited or participated in this farce.

And what are they doing over there anyways? Preparing something for rumps' upcoming Putin meeting where they plan on giving the bank away?

The ink is barely dry on a damning report that Russia, under Putin's orders, directly interfered with the US election. And the first thing they say is how they want to be even closer?
