ARDMORE, Ala. -- A man with a history of domestic violence killed himself after using a rifle to kill three other people including his ex-wife, who had complained in court documents that he was harassing her, sheriff's officials in Alabama said Monday. A judge had reportedly twice denied her requests for protection from abuse orders.
Darwin Brazier, 43, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Limestone County on Sunday. Earlier, Brazier's ex-wife Debra Hartley Rivera and two other people were found dead at a house in Ardmore.
Authorities identified the other two victims as Rivera's current husband, Radex Rivera, 41, and their roommate, Timothy James Hayword-Boger.
Officers were alerted after a woman told a dispatcher she had received a text message from Brazier saying he had just killed his ex-wife and the others and that he was going to kill himself, according to a news release from Limestone County Sheriff Mike Blakely's office.

One of three people killed in a triple homicide in Alabama was denied an order of protection against the killer twice from the same judge, according to court documents.
Cops say Darwin Brazier, who has a history of domestic violence, killed ex-wife Debra Rivera, her husband Radex Rivera and their roommate Timothy Hayward-Boger with a high-powered rifle. Brazier killed himself later Sunday after being cornered by authorities.
The three victims were found on the back porch of a home in Ardmore. Brazier fired 30 rounds from a SKS rifle with a high-capacity magazine, according to the Limestone County Sheriff's Office.

Debra Rivera was not feeling safe from her former husband, but twice saw Circuit Judge B. Chadwick Wise deny her requests for orders of protection.

(16,646 posts)Something like 92% of domestic violence acts go unaddressed by law enforcement or the courts. There is a statistic that is generated that purports that the #1 cause of death among 19-25 year old women is domestic violence. These are "he said, she said" cases where the courts tend to side with the accused, not the accuser. I get the whole "innocent until proven guilty", but in most cases, protection orders come with little risk to the accused and severe risks to the accuser.
