Over 40 countries sound the alarm on Trump's plan for auto tariffs

Over 40 members of the World Trade Organization including all 28 European Union nations, Russia, China, Japan and India approached the international body about potential Trump administration tariffs against foreign automobiles, according to Reuters.
The backdrop: The U.S. launched a Section 232 national security probe into foreign car imports in May. That's the same law President Trump used to impose sweeping steel and aluminum tariffs on U.S. trading partners, and WTO members warned that similar action against foreign autos "could seriously disrupt the world market and threaten the WTO system, given the importance of cars to world trade," per Reuters.

(115,670 posts)when Ford stood for "Fix Or Repair Daily." That's when people started buying foreign cars, and as a result of competition from foreign manufacturers who were building better cars, US car companies began improving their products. If these tariffs really kick in, will people stop buying foreign cars with the result that US manufacturers won't have to compete anymore and their cars will suck again?
Of course, there's also the fact that some foreign cars or their parts are made here, and a lot of US car parts are made elsewhere. But I'm sure Spanky didn't think about that, either.

(1,336 posts)And his so-called economic advisors are well past their best-before date. Doesn't matter how many other people try to emphasize to them that their Laffer policies have never worked, or that we do indeed live in a global village and that isolationist policies harm his own people, Spanky goes only with his emotions and whatever the last person has whispered in his ear. He's a LOSER, and is turning his country into what will be the biggest loser.
I'm sorry. Not a good post for July 4, but there it is, folks.

(3,148 posts)Just wondering. What if nobody had any, why not a fair playing field? I sure as hell don't think Germany or Japan should be able to tax a Ford or Chevy more than we tax a Toyota, or parts.
Get rid of all of them.

(22,791 posts)It's all the same to Trump if it's acclamation, approval, anger, fear, anxiety, as long as he's getting lots and lots of attention. We have an psychopath in the president's seat, and the GOP won't let us do anything about it because they want another conservative Supreme Court Justice.

(21,127 posts)And laying off workers temporarily until things are sorted out Can you imagine those rednecks going crazy losing their jobs because of Twitlers tariffs? And when the workers get those layoff notices they explicitly state it is because of twitlers polices. They will be moving those job to Canada and Mexico.
That way President Obama and The Democratic Party can not be blamed. And Fox and right wing media cant bs people because they heard it from employers.

(5,732 posts)any move that further destabilizes the US economy is what makes Putin happy.
Putin hasn't forgotten what the US and it's trading partners did to collapse the former USSR. He wants nothing more than revenge for that.
Trump just wants to avoid being outed as a the con artist that he is, he doesn't want the sex tapes reveled, and he doesn't want to be 'suicided'. A few illegal billions won't hurt either. I think someday he will be living in exile in Moscow. I hope sooner better than later.
