Trump's trade war with China is finally here -- and it won't be pretty, analysts say

BEIJING — Some said the day would never come, that it was all a bluff. But as the Independence Day fireworks cool in Washington, the eve of the trade war has arrived in China’s capital, where government leaders keep reminding people: We did not start this, but we will fight back.

President Trump’s first tariffs are scheduled to hit $34 billion of Chinese imports on Friday, and Beijing plans to swiftly respond with levies on an equal amount of goods. Border officers here could receive the order as early as midnight to slap new taxes on hundreds of American products, including pork, poultry, soybeans and corn.

And so would begin an unprecedented commerce battle between the world’s two largest economies — a conflict analysts fear could rattle markets, cripple trade and undermine ties between the United States and China at a time when the administration seeks Beijing’s cooperation on North Korea.

As the global business community watches the clock, China is moving to pin the fallout on Trump, framing the United States as a bully the Asian nation is forced to confront. A state media editorial this week called America’s “dictatorial bent” a global threat, while officials said China will “absolutely not” take the first swing.

drumpf does want to be our dictator, more than anything else, so he could stop all inconvenient laws and rules or regulations and do whatever the fuck he feels like at any time for any reason and no one can stop him. Of course, he's too stupid and ignorant to realize that Putin put him there and will definitely take him and his entire pretend party out at some point, just to sow chaos here and in the world.

Trump’s trade moves could endear him to Bernie’s supporters given that Bernie has long supported tariffs on Chinese goods.

I was a Bernie supporter during the primaries, and yes, China cheated for a long time so really don't care as much about those. However his mean spirited tariffs on Canada and Europe and saying these are security threats to America will totally not fly with the left so i doubt any Bernie supporters will be swayed by this. Unless their are Bernie Russian bots and those aren't really pro-Bernie but pro-drumpf bots using Bernies' name.

This is pointless for the US, and plays right into China's long term strategy.

China has been preparing for this for a decade, they have massive trade deals in the works without the US. Their Belt and Road trade proposal is so forward thinking it will assure that China and not the US is the largest world economic power for the next hundred years. Trump is merely hastening their implementation. Technological innovation will be coming out of India, China recognizes this and has forged strong free trade deals with India. Trump literally could not have picked a worse time to start a trade war with China, we have everything to lose.

And if it was just China that would be one thing, but he's started trade wars with the EU and with our biggest trading partners of all, Canada and Mexico. The average Trump voter has no idea what this means to them, our economy could be devastated within a few years.

They no so little about trade. The world economy can be fine without the US if the other major players remove trade barriers among themselves.

And China specifically is prepared to do without, they are united around their leadership's plans, this is their unified vision of the future, one where free trade exists with Europe, the rest of Asia, and Africa. China has invested more in Africa than any other world power and will control the resources there.

We are seeing a dramatic shift in world leadership, Trump is playing right into China's plan.

Here's what's scary, the world is seeing that they need to make alliances against the US economically, they would be wise to do so with security too. When Trump's actions blow up in our face, he will lash out with military aggression, it's just a matter of time.

of 1) The biggest guy in the room (China) 2) All of the group of friends you walked in with (Canada, Mexico, the EU) 3) a dozen or so other random dudes.

How is that going to turn out?

I have had this go round with lugnuts on Facebook countless times now, and they just don't even want to get it.

We're retirees and the canary in the economic coal mine. When that happens across the country and with our trading partners and across wider age groups, all hell will break loose. The poorest folks will be hit hard.

After ripping up the social safety net, Repug churches better pass an extra offering plate or two.
