A former Thai navy diver who joined in search efforts to rescue 12 boys and their coach trapped in a flooded cave in Thailand has died.
Saman Kunan, 38, lost consciousness on his way out of the Tham Luang cave complex after delivering supplies to the missing group, officials said.
He could not be revived by his colleagues.
The diver had previously left the navy but had returned to help rescue operations.

(101,730 posts)I'm guessing it is now clear how near impossible it will be to take those kids back 2.5 miles through those narrow winding water-filled passages. I only hope they quickly find a route down from the surface.

(37,648 posts)that doesn't bode well for the boys being able to swim out. I saw on tv that if they don't swim out, they'll be there for months, until the water subsides.
I'm not sure how this happened, but such a tragedy for everyone. Those poor kids and their leader.

Rest in peace, Saman Kunan.

(1,204 posts)Not just that this guy lost his life doing his part to rescue these kids, but really illustrates just difficult of a situation they are in. Just based on what I've read I get a sense of hopelessness. It gives me that sinking feeling at the pit of my stomach. I can't imagine what these kids, their families, and everyone else involved is doing through.

(2,692 posts)thought it was a good idea to take these kids in there in the first place...sounds like the kind a place an adult should think twice about exploring much less a bunch of kids
