Federal prosecutors abruptly dismiss all remaining Inauguration Day rioting cases

Source: Washington Post

District prosecutors on Friday dismissed rioting charges against all remaining defendants arrested after destructive Inauguration Day protests, bringing to a close a controversial case which led to allegations of government overreach.

Prosecutors began filing paperwork Friday afternoon to formally drop the cases against 38 people who had been awaiting trial.

The vandalism of downtown businesses on the day President Trump was sworn in stretched over 16 blocks as part of a disturbance called DisruptJ20. Members of a large group of protesters set small fires and used bricks and crowbars to smash storefronts.

In all, 234 people were arrested and charged with rioting. Of them, 21 defendants pleaded guilty before trial. But prosecutors had been unable to secure convictions at trial against others in the group.

And now there attempts at laws in various states to make protesting illegal. Who knows what the current Supremes Court would rule on them.

Federal charges, and huge legal bills... who's going to make them whole again? With an arrest record that will limit their jobs, they probably can't get a security clearance, and their legal debts will prevent them from getting credit and loans for cars of a home.

Maybe that was the point. Trump has a penchant for revenge and retaliation.

by throwing the book at them hard enough to deter others and set a precedent

They arrested people who were nearby and had nothing to do with the crimes committed. This had to do with discouraging peaceful protest just in case some anarchists or undercover Trumpsters decide to cause trouble and other people would have to pay the price.

They will be able to apply for expungement, although I have learned the hard way that those charges can still be found. I had a ridiculous arrest myself and the charges were dismissed and I was told that once they were expunged, they would only be seen if I were to apply to a position in, say, the FBI. They have come up 7 times within the last year and one was for a job application, so somehow you’re screwed either way, I guess.
