NFL players union files grievance challenging national anthem policy
Source: Politico
The National Football League Players Association filed a grievance Tuesday challenging the NFLs newly imposed national anthem policy, the union said.
The complaint is on behalf of all players challenging the NFLs recently imposed anthem policy, NFLPA said in a statement. The unions claim is that this new policy, imposed by the NFLs governing body without consultation with the NFLPA, is inconsistent with the collective bargaining agreement.
The policy, approved by team owners in May, requires athletes on the field to stand during the playing of The Star-Spangled Banner. Should a player or other team member refuse ,or otherwise disrespect the song, the offending party will be subject to a fine.
The policy was put in place as a compromise move after President Donald Trump frequently railed against players for kneeling during the anthem in protest of racial and other injustice in America, particularly police brutality.

(4,959 posts)I imagine it takes some time to develop the details of a formal grievance.
They have been taking other actions in the interim - from the NFLPA press release:
Our union filed its non-injury grievance today on behalf of all players challenging the NFLs recently imposed anthem policy. The unions claim is that this new policy, imposed by the NFLs governing body without consultation with the NFLPA, is inconsistent with the collective bargaining agreement and infringes on player rights.
In advance of our filing today, we proposed to the NFL to begin confidential discussions with the NFLPA Executive Committee to find a solution to this issue instead of immediately proceeding with litigation. The NFL has agreed to proceed with those discussions and we look forward to starting them soon.

(12,485 posts)Absolutely nothing. Just like those who thought a non-white male would not be the SCOTUS nominee. He hates Black and Brown people and he especially hates women in position of power. Trump was just playing head games with women on the list.
Why can't he choke on a chicken bone and relieve us of our misery.

My suggestion would be that the NFL players will drop this suit if Trump can recite (without help) the words to the Star Spangled Banner and God Bless America tonight.

(972 posts)He probably didn't want this settle either because he views this a winning battle for himself. This is red meat for this base right before a critical midterm. He gets to whip them into a frenzy and continue to his ax grinding campaign against the NFL.

(4,366 posts)misinterpreting the 1st amendment..
The First Amendment has been read to protect freedom of association, and the 1935 National Labor Relations Act recognized the right to self-organization, to form, join, or assist labor organizations, but in reality, the opportunity to organize is a right without a remedy.
