Papa John's Founder Allegedly Used N-Word On Conference Call

Source: Forbes

John Schnatter—the founder, chairman and public face of pizza chain Papa John’s—used the N-word on a conference call in May, a source with knowledge of the event told Forbes.

The call was arranged between Papa John’s executives and marketing agency Laundry Service. It was designed as a role-playing exercise for Schnatter in an effort to prevent future public-relations snafus. Schnatter caused an uproar in November 2017 when he waded into the debate over national anthem protests in the NFL and partly blamed the league for slowing sales at Papa John's.

On the May call, Schnatter was asked how he would distance himself from racist groups online. He responded by downplaying the significance of his NFL statement. “Colonel Sanders called blacks n-----s,” Schnatter allegedly said, before complaining that Sanders never faced public backlash.

Schnatter also reflected on his early life in Indiana, where, he said, people used to drag African Americans from trucks until they died. He apparently intended for the remarks to convey his antipathy to racism, but multiple individuals on the call found them to be offensive, the source said. After learning about the incident, Laundry Service owner Casey Wasserman moved to terminate the company’s contract with Papa John’s.

What happens when neo-Nazis hijack your brand

The Daily Stormer posted a picture of a swastika pizza after the CEO of official NFL sponsor Papa Johns blamed his company’s recent losses on players kneeling during the national anthem to protest police brutality.

He had a hernia burst. (It wasn't a work-related injury, but happened at work.)

No insurance there, though he worked fulltime. He ended up with $50K in bills, even after the surgeon and the hospital discounted most of their fees.

When he was able to go back to work, he was told he'd violated the company absentee policy and was fired.

(This was before Mr. Obama's worker-friendly policies went into effect.)

I don't like their pizza, but even if I did, I'd refuse to buy from them just because they were cruel and uncaring to a young man working hard (and all their other employees too).

Of course he's a racist.

(And he made up that "dragging behind cars" thing-- it happened out west, not in Indiana. What sort of guy makes up something like that? You can almost hear the glee in his voice, can't you?)

I'm older than that asshole, I've lived here all my life and I don't know what he is talking about.

We have more than our share of racists and I don't doubt that something like that may have happened in the past but his statement makes it sound like it was a common occurrence.

Used to own a farm in Michigan. When I visited we would drive from Chicago to Michigan, he would fill up his car right outside the Illinois border and would not stop in Indiana because it had a bad reputation for attacking Black people. my uncle used to say Indiana was the lynching state. This was in the 60’s. I grew up in San Francisco and as a kid couldn’t understand racism like that. It wasn’t until I was older I understood what lynching was. Once I had to go to the bathroom and had to wait on that drive until we got to a safe place in Michigan.

I was on a bus from Bloomington to Indianapolis many years ago that experienced engine trouble and had to stop in Martinsville. They told us it would be at least 30 minutes and recommended that we stretch our legs. I'd been talking to the black man in the next seat and asked if he wanted to go for a walk. I'll never forget his reply, "I don't want to be seen walking the streets of this town and you don't want to be seen walking with me."

I know now that white privilege had shielded me from many things but I still find Schnatter's statement to be kind of strange.

Your uncle may have been old enough to remember when there were lynchings in Indiana and was wise to use caution.

Maybe now they can hire a firm called "Fixers" or "Micheal Cohen Marketing". How about "Joseph Goebbels Cleaners", where they can advertise that they specialize in 'Browns Shirts, Hoods, Whites, Arm Bands, Iron Crosses, and More!!!'.

and told his managers that should they vote for President Obama there would be, because of alleged upcoming policies of President Obama, huge job losses in his company. Of course, the policies of President Obama did not impinge one iota on the financial viability of his pizza-making enterprise. I never touched his food.

He has serious issues concerning race. I wonder if he's racist in his hiring. Sent a memo to managers telling them to be slow on hiring n*****s or some such thing? All of his delivery people are white in this area. Maybe AA just don't want to work for a racist company?

Papa John's, Domino's and these other franchises can pound salt for all I care. Their product is terrible and their service is even worse. Maybe they mail out discount coupons, but I don't even read them.

Almost every town and city in the USA has an authentic Italian restaurant, and most have several. Buy from the real Italians, or else get a frozen pizza and cook it yourself. Why give your money to these RW assholes? I believe in supporting local merchants whenever I can.
