Its been three years since the House committee tasked with legal oversight of the US Department of Homeland Security actually had a hearing on the agencys actionsa lapse that Democratic members of Congress are calling indefensible.
The House Judiciary Committee is supposed to vet the legality of the departments policies, including the conduct of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the border patrol, which are carrying out Donald Trumps immigration policies. The political party that controls the House and Senate chairs their congressional committees, and sets the committees agenda.
But the committee is failing to exercise its responsibilities, say Democratic committee members in a letter today (July 11) to chairman Bob Goodlatte, the Virginia Republican. That failure has grown even more indefensible as the nation has watched the horrors caused by Trumps zero tolerance policy thats separating families at the US-Mexico border, the letter continues.
The Democrats letter comes as the committee is involved in a bitterly partisan fight over its oversight of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, including its investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. Goodlattte accused a former FBI agent who refused to testify in front of the committee this week of having something to hide yesterday, and other Republican members called the agent pathetic and part of the swamp today on Twitter.

Vote them out, but in the meantime, they will fuck us sideways.

(13,520 posts)my #1 greatest fear since the election. Theyre armed, extremely organized (except for keeping track of babies and families) and they really like their line of work.

(6,252 posts)I went to see him in the mid-nineties to ask his support for some legislation to help Credit Unions. When he found out who we were he said "I don't care about Credit Unions. I work for the Banks." That's a direct quote. The only reason he's "retiring" is the gop rules prevent him from being Chairman of Judiciary Committee again. He is a ginormous prick, and not in a good way.
