Black man asked to leave his own pool by officer in viral video

Source: The Hill

BY ARIS FOLLEY - 07/11/18 07:31 PM EDT

A black man who was confronted and asked to leave the pool at the apartment building where he lives in a viral video says he was the victim of racial profiling.

Indiana resident Shayne Holland used his cell phone to record a confrontation between himself and an security guard who was an off-duty Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer last Friday.

The incident happened when he was sitting at the pool at the River Crossing Apartments, where he has lived since February 2017, according to the Indianapolis Star.

"I had my headphones when she approached me so I didn't hear her the first time. When I asked her to repeat herself, she asked if I lived in the neighborhood. I said yes," Holland told the Star. "When she asked where I lived, I said I don't know you and you haven't identified yourself, so I'm not just going to give you my address."

Some residents of Indiana came from the south originally and they brought their racism with them.
There's some back woods thinking around them parts.
Grew up in Indiana. Will never go back to Mike Pence's domain.

Like only people who came from the south could ever be racist. My wife’s family is from the Midwest. Germany to NY to IN and WI in the 1700s and 1800s. Never lived for a minute in the south. Many of them are racist to the core.

Racism is America’s problem not the South’s problem.

I reject the notion that we in the south have more racist than the Midwest, especially in rural areas. What we do have? More diversity. My wife’s relatives can be openly racist all the time and never offend anyone or ever make the news. The reason? There are next to no African American families in the counties they live.

I grew up in the South and for years believed we were indeed the racist heart of America. Until I stated dating and eventually married a Midwesterner and traveled regularly to the rural Midwest. I could not believe the in your face open use of racial epithets like I had never heard in the south. Then I realize you can be out in the open when most agree with you and there is a lack of the very people you are disparaging.

She had relatives interested in moving to central Florida and the first thing they told the realitor is they did not want and blacks near them. Not the word they used. This was in the late 90s! When informed that was and illegal request to fulfill and actually impossible in this are since most neighborhoods are integrated, they decided to stay in Indiana. And were quite indignant that they could not live in an all white neighborhood in Florida.

I am not defending the south as lord knows we have committed our share of racist Sins. But white people all over America have been attempting to transfer their racist sins to we southerners in some attempt at atonement for their own racist past or present. The post I responded to was a perfect example. Clearly communicated that it could not possibly have been a midwestern thing, but had to have its roots in the south.

I forgot to mention that I don't speak to two of my siblings because even though they were raised in Indiana, they are racists to the core. They didn't get it from my Mother that was raised in the south because she was a share cropper and worked picking cotton along with the blacks in the south that ended up being her friends. Nope, my brother didn't speak to her for 4 years after Obama was elected in 2012 because he was pissed that she chose him over Romney. My sister told me she didn't like black people. I was stunned into silence.

But go ahead and call my bullshit. I happen to agree with you. I've seen racism in many forms and that's just my experience. I was wrong.
Carry on.

My ire was not directed solely at you but at the attempt, often seen even here on DU to somehow equate the south with racism in America. Until we admit it is all our problem it will remain a problem.

You are a big person to openly admit you post did not reflect you actual beliefs. Thank you.

And have a nice day.

my relatives from my Mother's side are all liberals to the ire of the locals that live in the south.
She doesn't speak to a few that have gone to the dark side too.

Sorry my post came across that way. my bad.
I hope you have a good day too. Cheers.
