Scoop: Trump wants tough new Air Force One paint job
Source: Axios
President Trump wants to update the paint job on the next version of Air Force One, ditching the iconic robin's-egg blue (which he calls a "Jackie Kennedy color" ) for a bolder, "more American" look.
The big picture: Trump rarely gets into the weeds of government negotiations. But he sat down in the Oval Office with Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg in February to personally hammer out the $4 billion deal for a pair of replacement 747s for use as Air Force One (the call sign for whatever aircraft the president is on).
Axios has learned that Trump had one specification for the plane that could cause tension with the Air Force and surprise around the world:
Trump wants to change the plane's signature blue-and-white look that goes back 55 years, to a redesign of the presidential aircraft by President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jackie Kennedy in the early 1960s.

(32,932 posts)From the article. snip...."We're told he wants the presidential bed aboard Air Force One to be larger and more comfortable more like the executive livery package on his personal plane than the current, couch-like sleeping configuration aboard Air Force One." A better bed does seem fair.
snip...
When I told presidential historian Michael Beschloss about Trump's plans, he replied: "Why would anyone want to discard an Air Force One design that evokes more than a half-century of American history?"
"Every time you see that blue trim and the words 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA' spelled out in that same typeface as an early version of the Declaration of Independence, it brings back JFK landing in Germany to speak at the Berlin Wall, Richard Nixon flying to China, Ronald Reagan stepping off the plane to see Gorbachev in Iceland and a thousand other scenes of Presidents in our past."
"JFK and Jackie Kennedy approved that timeless design (created pro bono by the premier mid-20th century industrial designer Raymond Loewy) to replace an earlier version of Air Force One that had simply said 'MILITARY AIR TRANSPORT SERVICE' and which made conspicuous use of the color orange, which Kennedy rightfully found 'gaudy.'"
"It was JFK who chose what Loewy called the 'luminous ultramarine blue' that has appeared on every version of Air Force One (and some other Presidential aircraft) from 1962 on." end snip

He's probably pissed that our money has their pictures on it.

(12,568 posts)What kind of egomaniac do you have to be to want to change a global symbol of American values? Oh, yeah, the same guy who puts his name on every building he "builds."
I hope this gets prevented early, but I'm not confident. I had thought his "It's all about ME!" military parade was going to be shot down, but it looks like he's going to get his way. And when he does, he'll want another one, but BIGGER, next year.
You know, I wonder if even the deplorables would find this unacceptable. It would be the equivalent of placing a TRUMP sign on top of the White House.

(6,881 posts)The majority of you reading this article, likely have flown on a commercial airliner, like the Boeing 747. As you know, boarding and navigating such an aircraft is pretty straightforward. You simply follow the narrow path between the seats to get to and from your own seat.
...
After takeoff, Trump gets lost while giving Melania a tour of the plane. I dont know how he gets lost, but he does. Air Force One is a beautiful bird, but its no different from any other commercial 747 in that theres one narrow hallway that takes you from the front to the back.
Dorey-Stein goes on to explain that the President ended up a seat in front of her, confused as to how to return to where he came from. When I take a step back, Trump takes a step forward, into my personal space.

Raymond Loewy (/ˈloʊiː/ LOH-ee, French pronunciation: [ʁɛmɔ̃ løui] November 5, 1893 July 14, 1986) was a FrancoAmerican industrial designer who achieved fame for the magnitude of his design efforts across a variety of industries. He was recognized for this by Time magazine and featured on its cover on October 31, 1949.
He spent most of his professional career in the United States, becoming a naturalized citizen in 1938. Among his designs were the Shell, Exxon, TWA and the former BP logos, the Greyhound Scenicruiser bus, Coca-Cola vending machines, the Lucky Strike package, Coldspot refrigerators, the Studebaker Avanti and Champion, and the Air Force One livery. He was involved with numerous railroad designs, including the Pennsylvania Railroad GG1 and S-1 locomotives, the color scheme and Eagle motif for the first streamliners of the Missouri Pacific Railroad and a number of lesser known color scheme and car interior designs for other railroads. His career spanned seven decades.
The press referred to Raymond Loewy as The Man Who Shaped America, The Father of Streamlining and The Father of Industrial Design.

W. Bush)
