Ryan urges Trump to pursue trade deals, not tariffs

House Speaker Paul Ryan warned Thursday that the United States risks falling behind the rest of the world because other countries are pursuing free trade deals more aggressively.
Ryan, speaking before the Economic Club of Washington, D.C., also said he hoped President Donald Trump's moves to impose tariffs on China and other nations was a negotiating tactic that would only remain in place until trade deals with those countries are worked out.
At the same time, Ryan threw cold water on the idea of Congress passing legislation to bar Trump from imposing tariffs, since that would require a veto-proof majority. On Wednesday, the Senate passed a non-binding measure pushing back against Trump's tariffs, but stricter legislation is having a tough time getting enough bipartisan backing.
Although Trump campaigned as a deal-maker, his administration has yet to embark on any new trade negotiations. It made some minor changes to a six-year-old free trade agreement with South Korea but has yet to complete a lengthy renegotiation of NAFTA. Other countries, though, have a much more active agenda.

There are no reigns on him. He was bolstered in the beginning by the wimpy Repubs who were either reveling in the tax cuts and deregulation they got, or cowering in fear of the evil authoritarian President who ruins careers and turns on people for the slightest of offenses or because it benefits himself.
The monster is unleashed. Ivanka seems to be the only one he listens to. She doesn't care about tariffs, since Dad exempted HER companies from them.

(22,063 posts)'do nothing' congress when they didn't have control of congress, and now that they do, guess what? All of their work went into passing a tax law favoring their donors, and that the bulk of it. Anything else? Nothing...now their excuse is that everything they do has to be veto-proof. Excuse after excuse after excuse. Hold their feet to the fire and I hope to god that they burn off w/ all of their lies and hypocrisy...
