A woman accused of attacking a 91-year-old Mexican man with a concrete brick has been charged with attempted murder.

Laquisha Jones, 30, was arraigned Thursday at the Los Angeles County Superior Court and stood behind her lawyer, away from TV cameras. She was also charged with elder abuse, infliction of injury.

Jones entered a not guilty plea, reported CNN affiliate KCAL. She was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of beating Rodolfo Rodriguez, 91, on July 4.

Rodriguez said he had been walking to a park when he passed a woman and a girl. The woman assaulted him without warning, hitting him with a concrete brick and enlisting a group of men to beat him, he said...Read More..

"I didn't even bump into her kid," Rodriguez told CNN. "I just passed her and she pushed me and she hit me until she was done."..The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said in a statement Wednesday that "detectives have discovered that this is not a hate-related incident."..Rodriguez has said that he doesn't resent the woman who assaulted him. He told CNN affiliate KABC: "May God forgive her for what she did to me."

Prior to charging, does the suspect in a case like this receive a medical or mental health evaluation?

It seems typical to add hate crime later as the case progresses.

The nice thing about idiots like this is they usually hang themselves with their mouths.

When I argue with dip shit conservatives and they say “ how do you know it was hate?” I say usually these morons open their mouth and prove the case themselves.

Because i read the person who witnessed the attack took a pic and told her. That's when she gave the excuse he had touched her daughter.

But I'm not sure that is the pic taken by that witness.

Not the best source but ...

https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/6757416/granddad-beaten-brick-woman-arrested-los-angeles/

Ms Borjas told CNN the woman attacked the elderly man with her hands before picking up a brick or slab of concrete and repeatedly beat him.

Also reported by another UK source, though one not respected here, that she shoved him to the ground and then picked up the brick.

... represent her best interest, as all defendants are entitled to -- and shitty representation rightly results in many overturned convictions. Anyone who truly wants justice wants as fair of a trial as is possible to get.

However, true legal insanity is a high bar, and temporary insanity is sometimes even higher. As both are affirmative defenses, like self-defense, that places the burden of proof on the defense.

It would probably be smarter for her attorney to first let them attempt to prove their case through an evidentiary hearing, etc, before deciding on any affirmative defense Mental health evaluations are quite common in sentencing for mitigation factors, so I'm certain even issues that wouldn't eliminate criminal responsibility would be factored in if her attorney does their job.

It might even be smarter to attempt to negotiate a plea vs attempt an affirmative defense.

I'm speaking strictly to the question of how a good attorney should try to get the best possible outcome for their client -- and that duty of zealous representation should be respected. It's one of the many problems with our criminal justice system that public defenders are often young and inexperienced, burned out after doing what many see as a thankless job, or so overburdened they can't adequately represent people. And you might wonder how anyone could BE a defense lawyer, especially if they believe their client is guilty. It's still their job to negotiate the best deal they can get, or to respect not wanting to deal and try their best to raise reasonable doubt without lying or knowingly allowing perjury.

But if we want justice, we also must want every defendant to have a lawyer who will do their job well.

From another article:

"The charging document alleges that Jones was previously convicted of making criminal threats in 2017. CBS2’s Cristy Fajardo reported from the Compton courtroom and said Jones was on probation for this case."
