Mueller Indictment Alleges Candidate For Congress Asked Guccifer 2.0 For Stolen Docs

A congressional candidate requested and received documents allegedly stolen from Democratic Party entities by Russian intelligence operatives during the 2016 election, a federal indictment filed Friday alleged.
The indictment brought by special counsel Robert Mueller alleges that the unidentified candidate made the electronic request on Aug. 15, 2016, and in return received stolen documents related to the candidates opponent.
This gob-smacking detail was one of many in the 29-page indictment, which alleged that the Russian military intelligence agency or GRU engaged in large-scale cyber operations to interfere with the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The 12 Russians indicted allegedly hacked the computer networks of the Democratic National Committee and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and email accounts of Hillary Clinton campaign officials, and publicly disseminated the stolen information. They concealed their tracks by inventing fake personas including Guccifer 2.0, a rogue Romanian hacker who claimed to be behind the hacks, prosecutors alleged.
Mueller charged the defendants with conspiracy to commit an offense against the U.S., aggravated identity theft and other charges.

(43,044 posts)I kept thinking Mueller will wait until he has a Congress with integrity. But today I think he knows and all loyal Americans know what can happen in an election. So I'm thinking if he sees a window now to run with it, he's going to do so. The future of America will not be left to one election, and the hope of no shenanigans the second time around.
There just has to be a 13th indictment soon to complement today's kickoff

(622 posts)I think that the indictment also says that none of the Americans interacting by email with these disguised Russians knew they were Russians and it pretty much implies that that's why no Americans (including the unnamed congressional candidate) were indicted. Maybe no Americans ever will be indicted for the stolen hacked emails. Do not think, though, that the indictment mentions at all other communications between the Russians (such as in- person communications) about the stolen DNC emails.

(30,613 posts)Of course, even if the US perps are able to claim plausible deniability about the Russians' identities, they obviously knew they were breaking the law when they requested stolen documents.

(622 posts)The indictment may not say that non of the Americans knew that Guccifer 2 was Russian intelligence. I think I was going by Rosenstein's remarks at the beginning of his press conference which highlighted that the indictment does not allege that any americans knew who they were interacting with and that no Americans were indicted. That certainly does not necessarily mean that a future indictment may not charge that some Americans - republicans - did know who had stolen these emails. For example, the president who explicitly on TV asked the Russians if they were listening to send over the stolen emails.

(4,572 posts)said so in the indictment. That they did not means those people are potential targets. Anyone who takes this batch of indictments as the end of things is very likely wrong.

(2,190 posts)This particular set of indictments doesn't involve Americans, that's all.
I think Mueller is letting people get used to the idea of the Russians' interference in the election first. Then he'll add the Americans who helped them. There are millions of people who don't follow this situation, and they're slowly being educated, I think.

(43,153 posts)1. Indictment specified a congressional candidate but not necessarily an elected congressman
2. Would have directly benefited from the DNC hack as his opponent was the DNC chair at the time
3. Based in Broward where Aaron Nevins is located
4. Promoted his supposedly Democratic campaign on places like far right radio host Joyce Kaufman's show
5. Has subsequently quit the Democratic Party
6. Has subsequently attacked the Mueller investigation
7. Has subsequently openly defended Russia against claims they hacked the election
8. Has subsequently spread conspiracy theories claiming the DNC murdered Seth Rich because he was the individual behind the hack
What sucks is if it is him, the line from the right will be that "a Democrat was the one who colluded with the Russians." But Canova is no Democrat. He was a stalking horse, someone who was meant to divide the party base in a heavily blue area, attack a party leader, and depress turnout.

(15,265 posts)that he contacted Guccifer 2.0 for info and got a raft of info sent to him. IIRC, the candidate then contacted the RNC to share the data with them.
I'm sure there are old DU threads on it.

(19,558 posts)While he is alluded to in the indictment, he's the, "posing as Guccifer 2.0, transferred approximately 2.5 gigabytes of data stolen from the DCCC to a then-registered state lobbyist and online source of political news. The stolen data included donor records and personal identifying information for more than 2,000 Democratic donors." person and not the congressional candidate.

(2,574 posts)Aug 15,2016 request for Russia's cyper help, then Sept Applegate's divorce/legal records are strategically made public. Issa thought he was coasting to victory, but by the late summer 2016 it was getting shaky. Issa needed a good smear against his surprisingly popular, plain speaking, respected Marine Officer opponent.
I've always suspected that Issa got these records in a (typically) Issa sleazy manner. They simply came out of nowhere, were ville to the core, and effectively cost Applegate's momentuum (and his election) dearly. Applegate's wife tried her best to inject reality against the smear campaign, but it certainly lost Applegate those 1500 votes in Orange Couty that won Issa the squeaker.
No Congressional Republican in 2018 was more endangered, desperate and connected to the Repub darkside than Darrell Issa. He my vote for the traitor.

A 2017 report by the Wall Street Journal highlighted that Florida GOP operative Aaron Nevins was in contact with the Guccifer hackers, and that a campaign consultant for Republican congressional candidate Brian Mast adjusted voter targets based on the stolen information. Masts campaign manager said to TCPalm on Friday that the campaign did not use stolen data. Curbelos campaign also said it did not use stolen data.
Congressman Curbelo has and continues to condemn any and all foreign interventions in the American democratic process, and neither he nor anyone on his campaign has ever contacted any foreign agent to request illegally obtained documents or information, Curbelo campaign spokesperson Joanna Rodriguez said. He welcomes todays indictments and strongly encourages the Department of Justice to reveal the identity of the candidate for Congress who allegedly engaged a Russian agent.
Rep. Ron DeSantis, a North Florida Republican who has called for Mueller to end his investigation and who is now running for governor, said he never contacted or received any contact from the Guccifer hackers. The 2016 document release included a file on Democrat George Pappas, who finished fourth in the Democratic primary for DeSantis seat.
