(CNN) An outbreak of cyclospora linked to McDonald's salads has sickened at least 61 people in seven states, federal health officials said Friday. The Food and Drug Administration is working with McDonald's to identify the salad ingredients making people sick and trace them through the supply chain.
As a precaution, McDonald's has stopped selling the salads in 3,000 fast food restaurants in 14 states to try to contain the outbreak, the FDA said. The states are Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota, Montana, North Dakota, Kentucky, West Virginia and Missouri.

Earlier this week, the Illinois and Iowa health departments said they were investigating outbreaks of a parasite that causes intestinal illness and might be linked to McDonald's salads. Illinois reported 90 cases since mid-May while Iowa had 15 cases since late June. It's unclear why their numbers are higher than those provided by federal officials.

(22,651 posts)Those giant wholesale corporations that supply cut products- can't be trusted to be "clean" in their facilities.
No one checks or even spot checks, employees in those giant facilities are afraid to complain about filthy conditions &- 'corporation self regulating doesn't work".
Restaurants shouldn't buy pre-cut veggies.
Americans shouldn't have to wait for sickness and death to be the 'early warning' sign.

(128,977 posts)and this issue isn't just relegated to fast food restaurants. You're afraid to buy fresh produce period - unless it's locally grown (and in the winter in northern areas, that gets cut off). I've been trying to grow more and more of my own. You can even do so indoors under something as simple as an $8 reflective aluminum clamp-on incandescent lamp fixture with a daylight LED or CFL twister bulb.

(20,870 posts)Just wait until the grreeaattt amazon.com gets caught up in a recall of FOOD or a PHARMACEUTICAL that has gone bad.
They'll be in full damage control mode, that you can believe.
How many will die in the process is yet to be seen but yes, it will happen.
Any time you order something and you get 10X (more or less) the quantity with no explanation is a major red flag telling you that all is not well at amazon.com. Seems the workers aren't being paid enough or trained enough and perhaps they really do not care.
And then there is that parasite in that packaged salad mix that got sent to 10,000 people or was it 100,000 people and was it 10 salad mixes or just one? Who got what? Does anyone know?
These people are INCOMPETENT and they do not know they are doing.
That "extra" free rug you got for from amazon.com will be paid for one way or the other (another example is that of the free rug; someone I know bought a rug and got two of them but they didn't complain as living in the world of the puke, you grab all you can get whether you deserve it or not and keep your mouth shut and you sure don't call them to ask WHY did this happen!).
De-regulation = GO DUMP!
