Georgia officers on leave after coin-toss used before decision to make arrest

Two Georgia police officers have been placed on leave after video showed them using a coin-toss app before determining whether to arrest a woman caught speeding in April, and the police chief said he is "appalled" by the move.

Webb, who said Friday she was speeding because she was late for her job at a hair salon, was arrested on charges of speeding, reckless driving and driving too fast for conditions, according to police records. On Monday, a prosecutor dismissed the charges, the station reported.

The officers used the terms "A" or arrest for heads, and "R" for release for tails, according to the station. The video audio appears to show Wilson say "This is tail right?," Brown says, "Yeah. So release?" and then Wilson says "23," or a police code for arrest, WXIA reported.

"These are people who are supposed to protect us, and instead are treating our freedom and our lives like games," Webb, 24, told NBC News in a phone interview Friday. "Its disgusting. Its scary to think police officers do stuff like this."

Georgia's finest putting their cop skills in action. We have a sick and twisted police culture in this country.

(12,618 posts)And the one cop decided to arrest her anyways. It would seem that she had planned on arresting her all along. The ironic thing is that while her case would probably have been dismissed due to lack of evidence (the cops have no proof she was going as fast as they claim, which is why the decision to arrest was extremely stupid and questionable) but the cops would probably not be in trouble at all if they hadn't gone through with the coin toss charade that was never going to be honored anyways. It would have just been a dismissed case. Move on.
But not now. They're probably going to lose their jobs. Idiot cops. Hope that brief momentary rush of power you got from bullying this young lady was worth it.

(183 posts)Listening to the audio, one officer asked the other office what she'd do. That officer responded "Atlanta answer or Roswell answer?" There were other points of confusion between the two officers. My guess is that this was on the job training, and one of the officers had come from the City of Atlanta PD and hired into City of Roswell PD. The fact that neither had a ticket book on them shows that both were unprepared to work their shift.
The moral ambiguity of not following the coin toss just adds icing to the cake.
