Trump Defends Russia: 'I'm Not Pro-Russia,' But They Did Help Us Win Wars

During a lukewarm interview with Fox News Tucker Carlson, recorded just after the press conference with Vladimir Putin on Monday, President Donald Trump argued that hes not pro-Russia, but the country really helped us win some wars.
Its incredible, he told Carlson Monday. You look at World War I and World War II, there was Germany. And in World War II, Russia lost 50 million people and helped us win the war. I was saying to myself the other day, you know, Russia really helped us. Im not pro-Russia, pro-anybody, I just want to have this country be safe, I dont want nuclear weapons even people thinking about it.
The interview aired on Fox Tuesday night.
In the interview that took place on the heels of the summit with Putin, where Trump received intense backlash for publicly defending Putins denial of Russian interference in the 2016 election, Trump also criticized the FBI and former intelligence official John Brennan.

(70,489 posts)Ah, history much Trump. Russia pulled out of WW I after the communists
took over.
Trump is fucking crazy.
Russia was allied with Nazi Germany until Hitler invaded them.
At the end of the war, Russia more or less occupied Eastern Europe - half of Germany, eventually walled-in Berlin.
We call that "The Cold War" - stable genius.
North Korea was a proxy. Vietnam was a proxy. Russia took us to the brink of nuclear war regaring Cuba.
I would so much like to get a history lesson from the Dotard.
THEN tell me he shouldn't be impeached and removed from office!

(8,754 posts)Not an alliance.
Germany and Italy had an alliance. Germany had to bail Italy out of a debacle in North Africa.
Hitler always intended to attack Russia, but wanted to take all of Europe before that. He changed his mind because he thought the Russians were preparing to break the NAP and decided to attack first. But Italy screwed up its bit in North Africa and Germany diverted resources to bail them out, setting a bad time table for their Russian offensive. That's why they attacked in late summer and didn't have winter uniforms and other logistical issues (like oil) for their troops.
Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia were ideologically opposed to each other. Though both were authoritarian dictatorships, they came from such different places there is no way they could ever be allies.

(4,461 posts)... he's having trouble understanding it. I get the feeling he thought his summit was a roaring success, and that he came off great. But his advisers are yelling at him that it was awful, Newt criticized him, and even Fox stammered around a bit. He's walking it back - weakly - because they are hair-on-fire insisting he do so, but I still get a sense that it's bewildering to him.

(47,397 posts)It seemed he could do or say anything and nothing stuck to him. Now he has very few people coming to his defense and the old tricks aren't working anymore. I think he looks very insecure and I can just imagine the tantrums that are going on behind closed doors.

We helped save Russia, not the other way around.
By the way, if Trump was an adult in 1939 and 1940, there is no doubt he would have been part of the original "American First" movement. As a matter of fact, there is little doubt that Fred Trump Sr. was allied with that group.

(64,995 posts). . .Stalin spent a couple years practically begging FDR and Churchill to create a second front. His anger after the war was because it took so long.
So, yeah, we helped the USSR by taking the time to plan the logistics of an invasion more overwhelming and better supplied than the Germans could resist.
They didn't join to the war to help us. We joined the war to help them!

Ìt is correct that the then Soviet Union under Stalin, was a tentative ally of Britain and the US during WWII. But, they had domination plans once the war was over.
During WWI, Tsarist Russia was undergoing an upheaval that paved the way for Lenin to take over. Russia had problems of their own and were fighting to stay alive.

(7,725 posts)as if the man is so introspective about anything or anybody other than himself. he's not "pro anybody" including America. His 2 hour seminar w putin really gave him a better understanding of russian history. ahem. Why is this man still in office? We need to think what the gop would do of Pres Obama did this...then do exactly that. He's a gd traitor to this country and that's not just some word to make him look bad. This whole saga needs o end. We have more than enough evidence. Mueller GD it, let's GO dude. Let's GO.
By the time Mueller pulls the damn trigger on these goons, it'll just be polemics bc the country will already be compromised and rent asunder. Imagine all the russians that are being installed everyday in America, under the radar. We are going down the drain.
My question to repub voters...what in the world do you think is in all of this for you?

(9,895 posts)Trump is a traitor and what he did on Monday was TREASON, full stop.
We should not be debating semantics and a poor grasp on history...we should be debating whether or not the framers intended for execution of treasonous bastards to be public or private events.
We should be discussing whether or not a cabinet appointed by a treasonous Commander in Chief may remain in office once the head of the criminal cabal is removed from office.
We should be sweating down Turtle and Munster in a black site, demanding that they turn over everything on everyone in the GOP conspiracy.
This is tragic. This is historic. The fact that we sit by idly while it goes unpunished in broad daylight is why this is a failed state...

(43,127 posts)Czarist Russia, and later Soviet Union's motives and treaties in both wars were complex. Czarist Russia was undergoing revolution, from Czar to White Russians to the Kerensky government, and despair. Citizens, as they usually do, wanted war to end. Germany permitted Lenin to pass through the war zone and return to Russia on a sealed train. Presumably Germany did this to help defeat Russia. Stalin had treaties with Hitler, but was he hedging Soviet unpreparedness for war, or simply waiting for opportunity? We supplied Stalin's Russia with materiel, it was good for the economy. Stalin waited years for the second front, and suffered major losses of life. I consider this summary painting with a broad brush.
Trump's 'helped us win some wars' is like a pre-school watercolor.

But it's not true to say "they helped us win the war," any more than it's correct to say that "we helped them win" by saving their bacon with our arms shipments in the period directly after Hitler invaded.

(37,449 posts)in fact they withdrew from their Allies in Oct 1917 after they killed the Tsar and civil war broke out in Russia. Stalin was a conniving SOB who didn't care if his soldiers were out front with spears. In fact some were. He killed off many of his own people. Russia helped itself with our industrial might and cash. In fact they never repaid the lend-lease debts, once the USSR went under we were left holding a $674 million dollar debt w/o interest on an estimated 1.3 billion dollar loan.

Indeed, USA helped save Russia from likely extinction. Russian military back then was in bad shape.
Germany didn't stand much of a chance fighting on 2 fronts, so they were spread too thin. Russia would have lost badly without the USA opening up a western front on D-Day.
