RNC panel votes to recommend Charlotte as site of 2020 convention
Source: Politico
A Republican National Committee panel on Wednesday voted to recommend Charlotte, N.C. to serve as the site of the 2020 GOP Convention, according to a senior Republican familiar with the talks.
The committee is expected to finalize the selection at its annual summer meeting on Friday in Austin, Texas.

As someone who went to the Democratic Convention in Charlotte, I'll say the city is way too small to handle the event (some delegations were housed in Georgia), and the protests are likely to be far worse.

(13,616 posts)When people defended Charlotte as being a purple city and that having the convention there would help us win in Dixie. It failed. Of course, the GOP convention was held in Tampa, and Tampa voted BLUE.
Sorry to say, the Carolinas are Red, and all that largesse Charlotte got from stealing banking and tech jobs did not budge anything.

(5,801 posts)but it sure looks like the RNaziC is sending a massive dogwhistle to the racists by selecting the city that has become notorious as the site of the nazi protest in 2017.

(14,173 posts)Could those facts be WHY the GOP went with Charlotte?
That the best scenario for them and to capture footage that their State TV propaganda network could use, would be the chaos from the anti-Trump crowds outswamping the abilities for local law enforcement and other general logistics to handle? That they are looking to use the anger they themselves have created by their subservience to Trump's treasonous actions to get footage of the more extreme and angry of the protesters in order to carry on their narrative of 'angry liberals' and how violent they are etc...

(9,766 posts)Why would the protests be worse since the city is small? Charlotte is a blue city. There were no incidents when they hosted the DNC a few years back. The police performed well. They were prepared.
Are you envisioning a multitude of protestors being bused in to cause problems?

(14,173 posts)That it is a 'blue city' only backs up my assertion. They may be purposely having it in a smaller city, with a majority of Dem voters because they know they will be setting themselves up, purposely. There is more than enough anger that more and more people are willing to get out on the street. No anti-Trump protester would be there simply to "cause problems" for kicks, there is more than enough of Trump's behaviour and policies to get riled up about without faking it. But that would be the result. The GOP is smart enough to use that to their advantage. They use any trick they can, unlike Democrats.
And yes, a large protest in a smaller city would by the very optics look more threatening (to the poor persecuted Trumpists).
Then between Fox News shots of large "violent liberal" crowds, that they WILL claim are bussed in, and some may very well bus in, invading the peaceful town, and surrounding the peaceful GOP convention, Republican operatives could organize counter pro-Trump nazi protests to clash with anti-Trump protesters to get even more "violent liberals" video recorded for the RW pundits to use later on their programs.

(9,766 posts)So either outside agitators will be the problem or there won't be the scenario you describe.

(14,173 posts)A smaller city full of Democratic voters who have now had it up to here with this traitorous bastard + a GOP convention that will be basically a large Trump rally where there will be many many Trump supporters in town. Flown or bused in.
What could go wrong?
Yes, many of those against Trump are angry. (Even a few in Charlotte.) I'm glad you can keep so even keeled. But large chanting crowds in a backdrop of a smaller city and downtown core etc will visually look more threatening on TV, especially Fox News were they will focus in on the most extreme of the crowd. As well there may very well be outside of town protesters. Why wouldn't there be. There is that much disgust with Trump that I can see that happening. I would not use the term "agitators" though. Because it has a connotation of someone just there to cause trouble and not caring about the issues they claim they care about. I see enough people angry at Trump that there is no need to bus in "agitators". Everyone there protesting will be protesting for good reasons.

Dorothy Counts (born 1942) was one of the first black students admitted to the Harry Harding High School, in Charlotte, North Carolina. After four days of harassment that threatened her safety, her parents forced her to withdraw from the school.
History
In 1956, forty black students applied for transfers at a white school.[1] This was after the passing of the Pearsall Plan in North Carolina. At 15 years of age, on 4 September 1957, Dorothy Counts was one of the four black students enrolled at various all-white schools in the district; She was at Harry Harding High School, Charlotte, North Carolina.[2] Three students were enrolled at other schools, including Central High School. The harassment started when the wife of John Z. Warlick, the leader of the White Citizens Council, urged the boys to "keep her out" and at the same time, implored the girls to spit on her, saying, "spit on her, girls, spit on her."[1] Dorothy walked by without reacting, but told the press that many people threw rocks at hermost of which landed in front of her feetand that many spat on her back. Photographer Douglas Martin won the 1957 World Press Photo of the Year with an image of Counts being mocked by a crowd on her first day of school.[3]
More abuse followed that day. She had trash thrown at her while eating her dinner and the teachers ignored her.[1] The following day, she befriended two white girls, but they soon drew back because of harassment from other classmates.[1] Her family received threatening phone calls and after four days of extensive harassmentwhich included a smashed car and having her locker ransacked, her father decided to take his daughter out of the school.[1] At a press conference, he said:
It is with compassion for our native land and love for our daughter Dorothy that we withdraw her as a student at Harding High School. As long as we felt she could be protected from bodily injury and insults within the schools walls and upon the school premises, we were willing to grant her desire to study at Harding.[1]

Sorry to say it took me so long to learn about this woman, and bear witness through the photographs of what kind of hell she endured trying to get to school in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1956, same town where the Republican Party wants to have its convention.
