Dems Want Interpreter From Trump-Putin Meeting To Testify Before Congress

Source: TPM

At least two Democrats have called for the interpreter, who assisted President Donald Trump during his one-on-one meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, to testify before Congress.

Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Rep. Joe Kennedy (D-MA) have pushed for the congressional hearing in tweets in recent days. Shaheen suggested that the interpreter could at least "help determine" what Trump "shared/promised Putin on our behalf." Kennedy recommended that Republicans take action if they are "as outraged as they claim" and "issue the subpoena today."...More..

Short article, with *VIDEO from MSNBC, Rep. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) says that Trump met with Putin alone for more than two hours before the Helsinki press conference which is unusual. They want to question the interpreter(s) and see the notes to determine what went on in the private meeting. Menendez said the testimony will take place next week and emphasized the importance since the Russian military is now saying it's ready to execute agreements made between Trump and Putin.

And also a Putin loyalist by extension.

I hardly think he would dare to testify against his bosses, or want to.

Senator Calls For Hearing With U.S. Interpreter In Trump-Putin Meeting, Congress needs to know what Trump “promised Putin on our behalf,” says Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, HuffPost, July 18, 2018.

WASHINGTON ― Nobody knows what President Donald Trump told Russian President Vladimir Putin in their private, two-hour meeting on Monday, after which he publicly trashed U.S. intelligence and praised the Russian dictator.

Well, almost nobody. At least one U.S. interpreter was in the room with the two leaders. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) says she wants to bring in that interpreter to testify before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on what, exactly, Trump shared with Putin.

>“That translator is an official of the U.S. government,” Shaheen told reporters Tuesday. “It is imperative that the American people and this Congress know precisely what the president shared or promised the Kremlin on our behalf.”

She later broadcast a similar message on Twitter...
