Massachusetts House Votes To Repeal Old Anti-Abortion Laws

Source: WBUR

The Massachusetts House has voted to repeal a series of antiquated state laws, including a 19th-century ban on abortion.

Supporters describe the move as a hedge against possible future rulings by the U.S. Supreme Court.

President Donald Trump's nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the court has raised the possibility the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that created a nationwide right to abortion could be weakened or overturned.

The House voted 136-9 Wednesday to remove the laws.

my parents lived in Massachusetts. My Dad was a Marine Corps Recruiter. My brother was born in 1952. Mom had no problem getting pregnant, however she had difficulty sustaining a pregnancy. She miscarried twice, in 1954 and early 1955. Her ob/gyn, thought she was getting pregnant too quickly. He thought that birth control might be in my Mom's best interest(s). He didn't suggest to her and my Dad that they avoid sex, just avoid getting pregnant.

Now birth control in Massachusetts and elsewhere in the US was illegal at the time. However this doctor, I guess, didn't care. He handed over to my Mom, a brown paper bag that had in it a diaphragm. If caught, both my Mom and her doctor could have gone to prison.

Mom used the diaphragm for the rest of 1955, ceased using it and got pregnant with me in early 1956. Good doctor for my mom, for me, so-so, since Mom had a history of miscarriages he had Mom use the drug DES (Diethylstilbestrol)

But on the issue of women's control of their bodies we have gained great strides since 1954.
